View Full Version : MSI G4MX Crash on startx
I have just aquired an MSI G4MX 64MB DDR (MX440-T8X), GIGABYTE GA-7VA and AMD 2002+ XP.
I have installed the latest nvidia drivers for Redhat 8.0 as of 6 April 03. When I attempt to start an X session the screen shows a range of PI and other non printing symbols and I am locked out.
I have attached my nvidia install log, "startx -- -logverbose 5" log and my configuration file.
Needless to say I am  any help would be appreciated.

That's a KT400 based motherboard - there is a known issue with that chipset. The current workaround is to disable AGP. We're aware of the issue, and we're looking into it.
Thanks!

How do you disable AGP for an AGP card and still have it work, now I am real confused.

Add Option "NvAgp" "0" to the Device section of your XF86Config file.

When Andy said "disable AGP", he didn't mean to disable the actual slot, just the extra features that an AGP bus adds on to PCI -- fast, independent access to a chunk of system RAM. When you use Option "NvAgp" "0", you're using your AGP graphics card like it's a PCI version on a faster bus (the AGP bus is 66MHz; most, but not all, PCI buses are 33 -- and from what I understand of that option, you get to keep the faster bus speed).
This is also why your AGP card shows up in /proc/pci -- to the kernel, it's just a PCI device on a different bus number than everything else.
Glad you got it working, though. :)
