Woot! :captnkill:

Paramount to offer movies in HD DVD

LOS ANGELES - Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG announced Monday that they will offer next-generation DVDs in the HD DVD format rather than Blu-ray, a move that further complicates the race between the competing technologies.

The move by the two studios will include the upcoming blockbuster "Shrek the Third" and all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

"Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience," said Brad Grey, chairman and chief executive of Paramount Pictures. "I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."

The competition between Blu-ray and HD DVD has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.

Studios and retailers have been choosing sides.

"Spider-Man 3" will only be available in the Blu-ray DVD format when it is released by Sony Pictures.

Likewise, people with Blu-ray players won't be able to enjoy the action-thriller "The Bourne Ultimatum," which Universal Pictures will release only in HD DVD.

Rumor is that its 150million payout thats behind it... You know its not the sales that are doing it considering how Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD 3:1.

Dammit these studios need to make up their minds. I stopped buying HD discs for a while. This is getting ridiculous.

just because its selling better doesn't mean it is better. Think of all the P4's out there compared to the better AMD's K8(?)s out there.

Bah. Does the 360 HD DVD drive work on the pc? I have to get it for shrek the third. A Blu ray drive will also be needed for Pirates of the Caribbean

Nice!! I was just starting to wonder if Sony was gonna get in a KO punch soon...this makes me feel better.

I noticed the HD-DVD selection on Netflix is kinda nice. I keep HD as primary format and blu and secondary choice and while looking through the blu-ray section and selecting movies I noticed most of the movies that I selected went in my queue on HD-DVD discs.

Who needs Blockbuster ;)

This is a rather big kick in the crotch against Blockbuster. No HD Shrek etc.

This format war is getting ridiculous.:p

I just found out some funny news regarding this "deal", doesn't seem like Paramount is too confident in this "Deal" since all Spielberg movies are not part of it.

Man, Why doesn't HD-DVD just give up... their sales are behind and they need to buy their support... sheeesh.

Despite selling more movies on the Blu-ray format, Paramount has announced today that they will begin supporting HD DVD exclusively. This move, rumored to be driven by a $150M exclusivity deal with the HD DVD group, comes after Paramount began favoring Blu-ray releases with higher quality video encodings and more HD features. The deal covers all of Paramount's properties excluding those directed by Steven Spielberg.

That's cause Spielberg is powerful enough that whatever he says goes, and he won't be bound to any contract like this. Basically the studios have to bend over for him... But obviously with every other Paramount title on HD DVD's Speilberg's will
likely end up there as well.

Here is the official press release btw: http://www.viacom.com/NEWS/NewsText.aspx?RID=1042073

Yeah, we saw how BD can only outsell HD 2:1 with 10:1 player ratio, millions of dollars of Sony bought endcaps, massive marketing campaigns, and movie studio buyouts with 80% studio dominance at the time. Lose your shortsightedness and see the real picture. BD's 2:1 statistic is pathetic given the push. I see you are panic trolling very hard, and making your double standards very well known. Accusing Paramount of selling out? LOL! How do you think BD has so many "exclusive" studios. DUUUhhh. Keep eating the turd sandwhich Sony forced down your throat. BD attach rate is absolutely pathetic. Paramount recognizes this and others will follow.

HD DVD had 33% of the market with very little marketing, no retailer endcap purchases, no retailer buyouts, no rental store buyouts, low player density, one major exclusive studio, and no game machine with it by default. Guess what's gonna happen now? Go on little guy, continue panic trolling.

BTW: if BD had extra content would it be a bad thing? It's too bad the technology is in pre-alpha stages and can't even match a lowly 30GB HD DVD in presentation, lol.

You BD dorks are going to be eating so much crow in 2 - 3 years, I'm gonna shove it down your throats, count on it!

Worse news to come from this is that Micheal Bay stated he wont make a Transformers 2 since Paramount dropped support for Blu-Ray. :(

Michael Bay doesn't own the rights to Transformers, Paramount does. Bay can whine all he wants, but it doesn't matter because he can't stop Paramount from making it since he doesn't own it.

Transformers 2 will be made with or without Bay. There are many other competent directors that will gladly fill his shoes.

A James Cameron take on Transformers would be quite welcome. :)

No one says he does... but I think he did a great job with the first movie and wouldn't want to see another director **** it up. Remeber what happened to the original Batmans?
