Right click 'Network Neighborhood', click 'Properties', enable the TCP/IP protocol, IP being the most important since it's the Internet Protocol.

When I used to be on DirecWAY satellite, prior to DSL, I used to use this application with my DW4000 modem:

whats the clock speed on your modem, is it overclocked, and finally is it on air or water, if it's on air try water cooling it. A 5 gallon bucket should do the trick, just drop it in..
