View Full Version : EVGA 8800 GTX's not recognized by 163.44

I posted this problem in the Bioshock 163.44 thread, but I've been to different posts across Teh Intervents, and it looks like 163.44 won't recognize the EVGA 8800 GTX on a clean driver install, and will freeze your system if you install from an older driver... SO BEWARE.

I'm not sure if this is a BIOS issue, a hardware issue, or gremlins, mogwai, and 80's nostalgia, but know that this isn't an isolated incident...

Did you remove the previous driver first? And XP or Vista?

I've done a clean install (uninstalled, run DriverCleaner in Safe Mode) and installed on top of working drivers... still no luck.

Did you do a clean install, or did you install over existing drivers? If you installed over existing drivers, do you know what they were?

on XP i did a clean install with driver cleaner as you said... also ran cab cleaner on both drivers.cab and sp2.cab.... the drivers i had before were the 162.18's

EDIT: on vista i did not use driver cleaner (does it even work?)... i simply removed them via control panel rebooted and then installed new ones... i noticed it saved my settings but they work fine in the only game i have in vista: bioshock

This is what I get when I try to install the driver manually (see attached).

I just installed over 163.11 and they work fine for me.

Are you guys getting the driver from nvidia's site? You're not using the international version, by chance, are you?

This is driving me nuts. It's so weird. I've never really had a driver issue like this before...

Guy over in nvidia's forums has the same problem (just to prove I'm not crazy): http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=43840&view=findpost&p=239761

Fixed! I installed from the 162.22 drivers using the international 163.44. It was strange: the install asked me if I wanted to install the driver even if the driver was unsigned, and after I clicked yes, the screen went blank. Okay, I thought, this is typical. But the screen never came back, and my pc would beep once in a while. I rebooted back into Vista, and the driver was updated and working... ugh, I don't like it, but it'll do for now.

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback, everyone.

Frank, there's a MS KB article about that problem.
