Why this in the Rumor Mill? It not a rumor, it is confirmed.

Henri Richards will be step down on 8 Sept, more news here (http://news.com.com/one-more-thing/8301-13579_3-9764315-37.html).

AMD had lost alot of money over the last month since Intel slashed the price of quad core Q6600 to very low price. AMD dual core CPUs cant compete with cheaper Intel quad core CPUs will continue through to Q1 2008 next year until AMD launch desktop quad core Phenom CPUs but I dont think AMD will survive another 2 loss quarters when the company's credit rating downgraded from "B" to "B-" as AMD's $5.9bn debt loan are now no longer secured to give AMD the security protection from the creditors.

If AMD run out of cash soon and want protection from the creditors then AMD will have to apply for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

No it happened to most companies with "B" and "B-" rating, they all didnt last much longer. Looked what happened to Commodore and 3dfx, they both had "B-" rating. So very few companies with "B-" rating survived through chapter 11 bankruptcy restructured but I really dont think AMD will pull through with massive about $7.3bn debt (and also huge losses could total over $2bn in 1 year) by Q3 at the end of Sept after secured another loan of $1.48bn. After Q1 AMD borrowed $1.7bn in loan but AMD burned all of $1.7bn it borrowed in just 3 month as the debt went up from $4.2bn to $5.9bn by end of June, well it supposed to reduced the debt.

I'm thinking that a simultaneous release of the new 45nm Intel CPU's and the nVidia 9800 series cards will be what slams the coffin shut for AMD/ATi as we move into 2008. I'm not a fan of monopolies and would hate to see AMD/Ati go under, but the cards have been dealt.

If they can't compete, than I'd rather see them go, allowing someone else to fill the market gaps. Someone who's in a position to aggresively compete with Intel/AMD.

Someone who's in a position to aggresively compete with Intel/AMD.We can't afford to see AMD/ATI go since the removal of competition will in turn raise prices on Intel and Nvidia products. As per competing with Intel, once AMD is gone there will be NO ONE to step up. The X86 market only has two relevant players. If one goes then the other will basically monopolize the market.

Guess I better drop a couple hundo on a Q6600 now before they get jacked back up to $500...

No one is going to fill the market gaps. They can't just use the AMD moniker after AMD folds. Half the fight is just getting brand recognition out there. Messageboards, review websites, billboards, arena boards, magazine ads, TV ads, radio ads, etc etc. Everyone knows we're completely innundated with Intel ads in North America, regardless of what medium.

Actually, they could.

Imagine if a company such as Samsung or even IBM purchased AMD (including ATi). With the available resources those companies have I'm sure they could perform miracles with AMD. If you have a solid product, and you can get exposure to it, then it'll more than likely sell. If which ever company that purchased AMD produced a ground-breaking processor that spanked the competition's (Intel's) in nearly every possible way and it wasn't priced too high, it'd sell really well (look at K8 when it was first introduced for example). The same can be said for a GPU from AMD. Personally, if AMD can't manage on their own I'd love to see Samsung buy them out. I think that be an incredibly awesome deal. :D

IBM wont be making any large purchases in the future, never mind AMD.

IBM was merely and example, partner. They wanting to migrate away from the hardware segment and focus on other things such as services and software, from my understanding. But I used them as an example cause they are more than financially capable of purchasing AMD. Heck, last I checked they could purchase AMD, nVidia, and Intel and still have money left over. Kinda' puts things into perspective. ;)

If either of the two companies were to purchase AMD it'd probably be Samsung, and for me that'd be a dream come true. :p

AMD is far from dead, they are an extremely large company, their acquisition of ATI was a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad move. Most likely we will see some massive downsizing as AMD focuses less on high-performance and more on budget/mainstream, server & workstation needs. Their time in the high performance market has ended...for now.

Yup. That sums up my stance on AMD precisely. We're gonna' see them focusing more on offering exceptional mainstream and low end parts for dirt cheap. Give them a few years and I'm sure they'll knock Intel off the throne again.

But for now... :D

No AMD is not far from dead, in fact AMD is a very dead company deepest in hole with more than $6bn in total debt and also not forget about $2.18bn losses in 1 year. AMD is really not an extremely large company but extremely small company worth $7.8bn with oversized 16,500 employees.

Look at NVIDIA, they are now much bigger company than AMD, worth $21.7bn with 4,083 employees. In theory with $7.8bn AMD size, they would had around 2040 employees so in reality they should layed off 14,460 employees a year ago then AMD would made very nice profit in every quarters.

Why hadnt AMD thought about massive downsized like Intel did 1 year ago?

So what has been keeping AMD afloat so far? Subsidies from the European Union? Americans here abhor that kind of aid.

Yet our government gives subsidies to various industries every year, doesn't seem to matter what "the American people hate" as much as what the government wants... ;)
