I borrowed oblivion for the ps3 from gamefly and played it yesterday. It seems to have much better lighting and sharper textures than the 360 version. Only difference in setup is PS3 is connected via HDMI while the 360 is using component. Wonder if that makes any difference.Anybody else felt the same way???

No the game is actually better on the PS3 due to it being developed on longer. Textures, Lighting, Framerate and loading all are improved on the PS3 version.

There is barely any difference at all. They both looked great IMO. I like the 360 version better because I like their controller better. I love the PS3 controller but I don't like where the joy sticks are. They feel too far in for me.

I think the most noticable difference is the load times. The PS3 is very quick, almost as quick as a good PCs.

That is very true.

There was talk of updating the 360 version with some of the engine improvements, did this ever happen?

There were rumors that it would occur (in fact, I think some of them even came from legitimate sources), but nothing yet. I doubt it will ever happen...not like it would help improve sales of the game or anything.

The 360 was suppose to get the updates that the PS3 engine recieved aswell as the PC version which were included in the Shivering Isles expansion but nothing has come up yet... honestly... I think they just shoved it under the rug.

That's because the PS3 version requires you to install a permanent 4GB of information on the hard drive to load off of. The XBOX 360 uses 6GB of hard drive caching, but that gets swapped about for every game you own - no games on XBOX 360 require a permanent install with the exception of FFXI.

The devs of Oblivion said they needed the 4GB permanent install because the BD drive was too slow loading the game off disc to simply cache (its about half the speed of the XBOX 360's 12x DVD drive in comparison).

Is there a problem with that?

Where did you hear that the PS3 version requires you to install a chunk unto the HD (Only game I have seen that requires that is Ridge Racer)? And plenty of crossplatform games load at the same speed on both platforms. X360 always has to be better for you eh?

BTW Taken from an interview...
IGN: Are you able to use the hard drive on the PS3 to make the world stream better?

Howard: We use it pretty much the same way we use the 360 hard-drive.

The PS3 version is just far more polished then the X360 due to it having a longer development time. It runs smoother, loads quicker and just looks better then the X360 version.

It's really just the devs making use of the features of the PS3 in order to improve the experience. Saying that its only because the PS3 version requires you to install information to the hard drive is no different than saying the 360 is better at loading most games because it has a faster DVD-ROM drive than the PS3.

They couldn't focus on HDD caching on the 360 version because all 360s don't have HDDs, it isn't a standard feature.

Sure the BD drive may be slower than the DVD-ROM in the 360, but there is a large HDD available on every PS3 to enable caching to make up for it.

That sums it up right there. HOW it is done on the PS3 isn't what is important. The only thing that should matter to gamers is that if given an option between the 360 and PS3 version of Oblivion, the PS3 version is the one you'll want to buy.

this is the dumbest **** I've ever heard. There is maybe a .01% difference between the XBOX360 and the PS3 version.

Someone who buys a PS3 because Oblivion has "slightly faster load times" is the most retarded person on earth.

go read up on the differences and you'll see that it's not a .01 difference.

PS3 version uses a lot of AF... the 360 version has more AA.

PS3 version has faster loading and a better framerate as well. I would say the PS3 version wins, but not by a WHOLE lot. Worth the upgrade for the really picky.

Why are you guys debating about some game that was released for the Xbox360 in early 06?? That's about a year and 5 months ago for those counting. As per which version is better, if you give devs an extra year to tweak and improve a game that's already been released on other platforms (i.e. PS3 version) then of course that version will be the best. Now the true question is... are the small improvements made to the PS3 version worth the extra year long wait?

Who's been arguing? Only the PS3 Haters come in here and deny it when we have been saying that its only better on the PS3 because it was released later, it had more time to optimize the game. The small improvements from what I have seen are pretty dam good, a framerate thats more solid and not having to wait so dam long for loading (which running around in a town means alot of). Plus the PS3 benefits from a longer draw distance. Yet again, it released a year later so it should be expected.

You don't hear about Presidential Candidate Argument, do you?

Then again... ;)

When you're talking about a presidential debate you're using the noun form of the word.

In verb form debating and arguing are the same thing.

edit: oblivion was better on pc.

I believe Bethesda released a patch for the PC & 360 that officially fixed the ugly LOD , and muddy textures. Even with these fixes, I still think the PS3 version had slightly better detail & framerate compared to the 360 version from everything I have read.

I don't think the PC version needed a patch. I never downloaded any patches for my PC version, and it still looked better than the PS3 version...of course my PC is quite a bit more powerful than a PS3 too.

EDIT: Though, on that note, I also run several mods on the PC version, including an HD texture pack...can't remember the exact name of it, but that also helped the game out alot.

The enhancements were built into the pre-Shivering Isles patch. Some people can't even tell they're there, but the distance textures and fade-in WERE improved in that patch (on PC and 360).

Of course, if you have mods to enhance the distance textures and such you wouldn't even notice.
