Cool! :D Having the install complete I really think you'll find debian much less finicky than the *buntus. Just my personal feelings, but I always thought I was doing something/configring something wrong, then evilghost said he was having glitches and such too...time for a change.

Me likes stable. ;)

I've been trying for the past hour to get compiz-fusion to install . . . but I keep getting broken package errors from Trevino's repos. WTF? Also, Debian forums don't have any info on CF+Debian+NVIDIA install how-tos. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks grey. Debian seems alright so far, I'm not digging to the two different terminals and running "su" but I'll get used to it. I'm running Debian on an older PC, so it'll be fun to play around with when my gaming rig gets back in action with the C2D upgrade soon.

Your welcome six.

I put together a list of different repositories everyone here contributed, I keep the file so I don't have to search again for them.

I would just be careful of the "experimental"..I've got a mix of everything else going with nothing broken, experimental might break it for you though, use at your own risk! :)

EDIT: I gave up on the comp-fusion for now, I got the broken packages also. A couple or three more releases and I bet it's up to snuff.

Thanks man. Compiz still won't install for me . . It says it's going to install and needs xxxx packages too. Then it will say "0 to install, 0 to config, etc" lol. Ok? Compiz-Fusion was really easy to get going on Ubuntu, I don't understand why it's not working on Debian. Maybe I'll try Beryl.

I got it installed easy enough, it just broke hard on me after a cold start one morning and synaptic showed a bunch of broken packages. I may try on my test box, if that works I'll try again on my main rig.

Good luck with it though, maybe you'll get it sorted easy enough.

Man, I can't get CF nor Beryl to install . . . packages keep breaking or it just won't install. Maybe I need to reinstall?

I kind of hesitate to try and help here as I didn't get it working myself. I may break it worse on you. :o

The only thing I can think of is try different repos if available, or download and work from the tarballs.

Sorry I can't be of much assistance here...

Doubt it there should be no need to re-install, can you show us the output of apt-get -s install package_name replacing package_name with whatever the CF or Beryl is named as and your sources.list.

It basically just says "Broken Packages", even though I installed CF on Ubuntu earlier this week.

Ubuntu is not Debian things can be different. In order to be able to tell why you are getting the broken packages message you will need to show us the output of the apt-get or aptitude install commands so we can see where it is failing then maybe be able to get around it on the command line. Synaptic is next to useless if mixing differnet branches eg stable with testing or unstable it has pretty much no dependency resolution for situations like that it is designed for one branch only installs.

Alright there is your problem right there you need libc6 from either testing or unstable in order to be able to install it whereas you are running a stable system. So you have either the testing or unstable in your sources.list this is not really the way to go as it just won't work because too many things depend on libc6 it is the entire basis that the OS is built around/upon so when you upgrade it you may as well be running the higher branch it is in. What you could do is dist-upgrade to either testing or unstable, with testing being the best choice, then it should install and if needed you can do what is called apt pinning and get the odd package from unstable. Now whether you want to do this I don't know but if you want I can give you a hand getting the proper settings in place so it should work. Another option is just getting the Debian source for the package(s) then build them yourself and installing the resulting .deb files with dpkg if they don't have a hard dependency on on some package in testing/unstable (eg must have new feature in libc6 for instance) then they should be able to be built for your install then they will just work.

Another thing I see looking back here that you have the backports in you sources.list. So what does apt-cache policy libcompizconfig0 show you? If you see that it is at the backports site then you will want to remove/comment out the unstable line then update and try to install from there the work of building the packages for a stable install would have already been done so it should work fine.

Ahh, that makes sense. I had to install libc6 in order to install the NVIDIA drivers but I see where I installed the "stable" version and not the "unstable" or "testing" version. So I'm assuming I need to change my repos in order to get a "testing" version? Which repos would that be?

Sorry, I'm not used to Debian, but more of Ubuntu where a lot of things are already installed/taken care of lol. Still got a lot of learning to do! But hey, what are forums for anyway?

libc6-dev I take it you mean libc6 would already be there.

It appears not unless you need the latest version from unstable I had thought it was not available looking at your inclusion of unstable in your sources but the versions (http://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=names&keywords=compiz) are the same until there. So you may want to remove/comment out the line for unstable you have in your sources.list then update to refresh the package cache and install compiz which I take it is what you are after. I have never used it but I believe you need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to enable the feature or maybe you get an option/information screen during the install telling you the changes needed.

Sorry, I'm not used to Debian, but more of Ubuntu where a lot of things are already installed/taken care of lol. Still got a lot of learning to do! But hey, what are forums for anyway?

Exactly everyone has to start somewhere.

Alright, I've been playing around with Debian for a little while and I even tried to reinstall Ubuntu and CF . . . no luck. The problem with Ubuntu is that NVIDIA drivers wanna screw up the X config. Even if you reinstate your backup xorg.conf, it still won't load X.

I guess this is just something with Linux. On my other rig (currently under construction), I had no problems with installing and running CF. Guess Linux and NV drivers just hate my test rig lol.
