Norton 2008 is here

I know almost everyone hates Norton, but I've been using it for a few years now. I just bought Internet Secuirty 2008.

Now here's the good news! My physical memory usage before I installed it was about 760 MBs. After I installed and restarted it is 850 MBs.

Norton 2007 took up like 200 to 300 MBs of resources.

For the first time, Norton hasn't slowed my computer down.

Well I left my computer running and went to get something to eat. Just got back and my mem usage is 670 MBs, so it's actually lower than it was.

I'm guessing Norton 2008 has little to no impact on system resources.

and compairing out of the two

Norton Internet Security and Norton 360 will hose the network stacks of your machine if you try to remove it, especially if you're running Vista. We've run into that countless times with student machines in the last 6-10 months.

The only reason I keep Norton (an older version) installed on my kids' PC is for the parental controls. Otherwise I use AVG/ZoneAlarm and my router's NAT firewall. Are there any good free parental controls software out there?

I use Norton's firewall because it is one of the few firewall's that will allow you to block itself from accessing the internet. Most internet firewalls give themselves a special exception to access the internet and that scares me. If it doesn't tell me when it's accessing the internet, what else isn't it telling me.

cant rememeber the last version of norton i used. think it was net security 2003. the amount of resource it uses increases every year.

No Norton 2007 did not took that much, you need to check processes how much memory all Norton 2007 files use in memory. My Norton Internet Security 2007 used just 4MB instead of bloated 100MB with Norton Internet Security 2006.

Well saw Norton360 in action, it seems it's a good product, but way too many things in it, it checks if ur password is safe, optimizes ur HDD, ...

Well I don't know, I use norton 2003 since I got it for free and it lets me reinsall it as many times as I want with a new one year subscription every time. I also use norton AV for system and files scan, but I do not run it in the background.

100 MB of memory usage is still really really bad. It wasn't so long ago that a top end computer only had a total of 128MB.

Installed BitDefender Antivirus 2008 today (only antivirus, not the full Internet protection suite), it has 4 active tasks:

vvserv.exe, 2.204 kb
xcommsvr.exe, 96 kb (wow)
livesrv.exe, 1.440 kb
bdagent.exe, 964 kb

All of the tasks are 64bit native (I remember my old Symantec Antivirus had some tasks running in 32bit mode). It has a cool "gaming mode" that you can activate via shortcut keys, so it lowers its resources even more (more???) by disabling some tasks not necesary during gaming. 1 year subscription for only 22€ (10% discount)

I used to like Norton a long time ago..but then they started installing soo much crap in your machine..simply hate it now..these firewall/spyware/anti virus i use don't slow down my machine or pwn my memory -.-
