I read the readme file like 100 times….
This is what I did I d/l the new drivers from the site
Version: 1.0-4349
Operating System: Linux IA32
Release Date: March 31, 2003
I am running clean installation of mandrake 9.0.

Then I do this:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run
it does this without any errors.
Now I try and edit my XF86CONFIG-4 file
Change the line to read this:

Driver “nvidia”
Load "glx"
And then deleting these lines
Load “dri”
Load “Glcore”
Now I restart my computer and my x windows doesn’t load it gives me these error:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
Now I go to the read me file… it has this problem in the Q/A section and I can’t figure out how to fix this.
Any help would be helpful.
I also would like to add that I have been doing a lot of reading before posting this but I cant get this to work

i also did this:
modprobe nvidia
the i do startx

Freezes my computer.
Ctl-Alt-BS doesn’t work
And Ctl-Alt-Delete doesn’t work
So I have to hit the power button.

Here is my log file
http://www.geocities.com/dk8996/XFree86.0.log

I have asus A7V8X mobo and geforce4 ti4200 agpX8
Everything works fine under winXP

plz help
thank you

(II) NVIDIA(0): AGP 8X successfully initialized Since you've been looking around, you know that AGP 8x is currently broken, right? Try backing off to 4x (AGP 2.0) instead; you probably won't even see a performance drop, since AGP isn't even used unless the onboard video RAM runs out.

I'm in the same boat - Mandrake 9.0 and 1.0.4349. I get the same result, and I'm using a AGP4X mobo (ECS K7SEM). So it's not an AGP problem. I get the same errors you do - sometimes it reports no valid screens are available, other times it hangs. After studying the XF86Config-4 file, I concluded there was nothing wrong with it, and Nvidia's driver is full of crap.

I have tried everything to make it work on 9.0, it just won't. Mandrake's website has errata for 9.0 that mentions an Nvidia problem and a patch for it. I applied the patch, it still won't work.

Face it - Nvidia has not tested their drivers on Mandrake 9.0. If they had, they would know it doesn't work. Seeing as how Mandrake is one of the most popular distros, this doesn't speak well of Nvidia's Linux support. But then, I'm sure they are only trying to support Linux because us geeks are nagging them to do it.

I'm going to blow off 9.0 and try 9.1. Hopefully the new Mandrake 9.1 with XFree86 4.3.0 will work with this Nvidia driver.

Well that’s the thing … I have mostly good quality parts.
I don’t buy parts for my computer just bcs it’s supported by linux. I buy them bcs they are good quality.
But then you think if it works under windows … it should work under linux. You know why you think that … everyone says that linux is better then windows.
And then u find out ½ your hardware doesn’t work…. And it sucks

I GOT IT TO WORK......
IF U HAVE A7V8X (kt400 chipset) mobo and Ti4200 AGPx8
DO This:
Option "NvAGP" "1"
...
read the readme file (app-f) APPENDIX F: CONFIGURING AGP
thanks for your help!!!
