View Full Version : nvidia cp temp controls, it likes my 8800 at 80c!
I just finished building my new rig, and I'm trying to become familure with all my fan controls and temp monitoring tools. Unfortunatly I am looking at the nvidia gpu controls and its auto fan controls are keeping the fan of the gpu at %50 while the temp is at 80c! Worst yet, it seems that there are no 2d controls, so the reason my card is 80c is because its fully clocked up even though I am not in a 3d game/application. (I am in windows vista, how ever I am not in any 3d mode, I havn't turned on the eye candy since it last tested my video card to be an inept POS before I installed drivers for it). There was a 2d clock setting for my 7800gs in xp, was this for some reason removed in xp? Is there an alternative?

You can set your fans as you wish. is 80c your Idle or load? if its your load then there isnt much to worry about, the 8800s are good to 100c
no, 80 was idle, but thats with the fan at less then half speed. 100 is pretty darn extreme.

yea give rivatuner a try... 80*C idle is way too high and 100*C is dangerous

I never let my fan go under 60% in 2D

The driver will automatically adjust the fan RPM rate after it exceeds a certain tempature threshold. As the tempature raises the RPMS will also raise to compensate for this. Raising your RPM rate of your fan only decreases idle temps assuming you havent exceeded 85C. The further above 85C you go the higher the GPU RPM threshold will go.
I installed rivatuner, and apparently my smartfan rule set says that min temp is 72, OPERATING temp is 82, and the high limit is 92. Seems pretty damn high imo, I think I'm gonna leave it perminantly at %90 (I cant really give it 2 different values depending on if I'm in a game or not). Its a little audible, but a small sacrifice for ultimate power. ;)
