so, i was able to get a copy of Vista Ultimate (32 bit) for very cheap, so i took the plunge.

got everything up and going. all my favorite programs still run, so that's definitely a plus. it's working good so far, but the sound drivers absolutely suck lol.

it's ok for now. looks clean. only problem is that it asks me 20 questions every time i try to do something. hopefully a future update will allow users to disable that.
i was worried about it being smooth, but it is indeed running smooth. it was probably good to go with the 32 bit version anyways. it should be a while before 64 bit takes hold, and by then, i should have a new rig anyways.

i was also worried about not knowing where things are, but tbh, everything is in the same place, which is great :D
at least i can have an opinion in these forums now, HA! lol

You can turn off the nagging...

Msconfig -> Tools > Disable UAC -> Restart

You'll probably be finding new stuff for a few weeks :)

Enjoy and feel free to ask any questions if you want :D

all i can say is, campus licensing is the best :)

tbh, i dont notice much different than XP atm. im sure the majority of it is behind the scenes though (ie security fixes and stuff like that). i do like it, though.

Wait til you change something...

I added a hard drive to this PC (dual boot), Vista wants to re-activate, but XP media centre is fine.

Changed the Audigy for a Xi-FI, Vista wants to re-activate and again not a peep from XP.

I'm going to reinstall the machine anyway, so cba to activate Vista again yet (so aero's gone now).

Well played MS for making WGA less sensitive in Vista...

huh? I got a new CPU and Vista didn't make a peep... same with the 2 new 750GB Drives I just added.

Think my first one was related to the driver update bug where MS IDE drivers and intel drivers used different methods to ID the drives so it thought all the drives had been changed (had to update the drivers so that vista could see the new drive). Not sure about the second one.
