I think they are great. Not had one go on me yet, and they've had more than their fair share of use. My Philips was so crap in comparison. But that was an early one, they're probably a lot better now.

Lite-On makes the best CD burners for the money. They're every bit as good as Plextor in terms of quality and they cost a heck of a lot less.
LiteOn CD-ReWriters kick ass!

-I doubt that they use the same high quality parts that Plextor uses, but I question the purpose of going with things like metal gears. As far as abilities, I think they exceed what Plextors can do.

Just swapped out a 16x Plextor for a 52x24x52x Lite-on, and I must say I'm very impressed for UKP45.00...
1. Solid build quality.
2. Very fast.
3. Quiet for a 52x speed drive, no vibration.
4. Smartburn is very impressive.
Overall - you can't go wrong. And it's as Clone-CD compatible as you can get ;)

Most of those off brands that you'd find at your local Best Buy or Circuit City are usually Lite-On drives too. You can sometimes get those for $30 or so after rebates. I'd just get one on newegg or something for less than $50, then you don't have to worry about freakin rebates that take months, and you know what you're getting.
