the only thing I really have a problem with in Vista is the lack of bilinear filtering in most of my old 2d emulator programs. I don't know if it is a driver issue or a vista issue but it surely does make my old emus look very ugly and pixellated.
If anyone has FCE Ultra and or ZSNES fire it up in vista and you will see what I mean. There is absolutely no bilinear filtering going on to blur the pixels. This feature was very handy in combination with 2XSAI filters and HQ ones in the emulators. now it looks like crap no matter what setting you use.
Is this a directdraw issue and is there anyway to force bilinear filtering in all directdraw apps in vista?
For some reason my Sega genesis emulator KEGA works with bilinear filtering so I know directdraw works with it.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I wish I could use MAME32k on Vista and still be able to play Street Fighter games online :(

darnit I'd rather keep running xp...I have a legit copy of vista 64 on the way to my house but this stuff is getting to be too much of a hassle. Think I'm just going to get XP64 and be done with it for a while. I have 2 directx10 games I don't even play I just want stuff to work the way it should.

ZSNES is junk.

I use snes9x. SuperEagle should work.

For NES, RockNES is good.

I'll let you know some tricks next year when I actually get Vista. ;)

Is there a version of Kaillera that works on Vista so you can still play NES/SNES/Arcade, etc. online?

buffbiff21

There's a kaillera for PJ64, so you can play SSB online.

just tried snes9x latest version..bilinear filtering does not work and sound has serious buffer issues..I'm just gonna have to keep dual booting xp and vista. dammit.
Vista's gonna have to be for a few directx10 titles only.

Sucks. I know how much of a treat filtering is on those old school titles...

XP ftw.

Hey, just a thought:

Have you tried PCSX2 or ePSXe with any filtering? Those use 3d filtering (if you grab Pete's openGL plugin for ePSXe, you can use GSLang filtering shader effects... :drooling:)

If you get the 3d filtering working, it may be a 2d setting under Forceware. I don't have Vista, like I said, but you could check on NGemu and possibly find a solution.

Hey buffbiff, i use those same emualtors, very good to this day. Ive been using those since 98 and still work fine.

Project64 is still the best for N64 games and use dGen for Sega Genesis.

But yea i was talking to my friend earlier and he says all his keygen based apps and even some he paid for don't work in Vista.

It must be the DRM thing thats keeping certain things from working right.

These aren't keygen apps.. emus are free.

FearMeAll was referring to the graphical filtering effects not working with Nvidia's Vista drivers... not DRM.

I use dGen too.

Mame32k works fine with online for me in Vista 32. Might be a problem with Vista 64 though. Good thing I also got gameports working on Vista 32 as well. ;)

Those emulators might need updating to support bilinear filtering as an option in Vista rather than letting the driver control 2d filtering. Mame32 has a bilinear filtering option which works fine in Vista 32 on my end.

Really? I remember getting some .dll error when launching Mame32k on both versions of Vista but it's been awhile. Are you using version 0.64?

It says, "Mame32k has detected an old version of comctl32.dll."

mame32 works with filtering in vista 32 at least. That's what I have right now. I'm going to bestbuy today to see if they have xp64..I may just get xp32 if they don't have it as it is still a great OS and there are about 0 64 bit games.
I'll come clean and say my current xp is pirate. I'm swearing off my pirate ways though and am finally going to buy it as that os has served me so well. I don't even know if I will install vista until like next year. After using it the past 3 months I am just not impressed at all. Maybe next year. Directx9 ain't goin anywhere for a while.

I also get that error message, but it still lets you play online after clicking ok.

Does your game look kind of crappy an pixelated when you go full screen? Not sure why mine looks like that but I can't configure any settings because of that error :|

there is something weird going on with directdraw and Vista. There has to be a way to override it.

I tested 2 old NES emulators ManiacNES and Nesticle with Super Mario Bros but both programs crashed in full screen with DirectDraw error on Vista, they both no longer updated it to supported Vista.

I had another idea last night and checked MESS (http://www.mess.org/) page and they still update the program today, the latest build is 0.118, tested NES module with Super Mario Bros and it worked in full screen. :D

I checked in NES properties, it can use all either GDI, DirectDraw and Direct3D mode and also I found that bilinear filtering is enabled. It all worked fine. :)

You can still configure it by editing the mame32k.ini file. It's in the 'ini' folder. I'm not sure mame32k has a bilinear filtering option though. I use Mame32plus and it provides the option which works fine.

Ok...WTF ZSNES and SNES9x both crash for me when trying to run anything.

I ran across this thread by accident, and thought I'd give RockNES a try. I've been playing the original Legend of Zelda ROM, and it brings back so many memories of my youth. Even better, I can play it with my keyboard, and use the Internet to find maps and such. It's even more fun because I can IM people and browse NVNews while I'm playing. I'M SO HAPPY! :D

I use Nestopia now. Seems to be better than any of the others I've tried and is loaded with features. Haven't had a single NES game not work perfectly and I think I have them all.

I used Rocknes back in the day haven't checked it in a long time. But for now I'm really diggin' Nestopia. The color palette seem more accurate than Rocknes by default. Try it out some time.

Also in regards to the beginning of my thread 2 years ago, Nestopia allows the choice of bilinear filtering or nearest neighbor. I like choices. Also supports all the HQ4, Kreed, 2sxai all that and scanlines whatever you want.
