The "Which Distro" Question

Primary requirement:

3D support for 8800 GTX with default install

Secondary requirements:

X-fi support
NIC support for mobo in sig


Anyone know of a distro that can do this? I've tried Suse, Debian, Ubuntu, and FC6 (I'm going to try 7 tonight) and Mandriva Spring.

+1, I still don't have full support for my audigy4, although the Emu10K1 drivers (I think that's what I'm using) do an admirable job. Not sure how an X-Fi would fare though.

I've heard out of box support for 8800s is very good with PClinuxOS, but haven't tried it.

I can vouch for debians stability with them, but a small amount of work is still required of course for install.

I installed FC7 last night, and was surprised that the X-fi was at least recognized properly. Of course, it didn't work....

Also, I had put Debian on before that, but it didn't recognize my network card, either....

I tried PCLinuxOS, but it did the same thing Debian did last night. It fails to mount the CD/DVD disk image because of AHCI, even though Fedora Core loved it. I could disable AHCI, but then I would have to switch that every damn time I booted.....

I give up again. Thanks for your help, though, guys!

You could just edit your boot parameters in /boot/grub/menu.lst

Not sure if that's the correct syntax, but it would boot that way every time after.

I didn't mess much with the X-fi issue.

However, I'm talking about trying to install the OS with the AHCI issue. I don't have many options under PCLinux, but with Debian it prompts me for a Driver Floppy to support it. Once I got the OS installed, it would be non AHCI while XP would be looking for AHCI. I'd have to find the drivers for Linux since XP BSOD's if you try to boot without AHCI on a system expecting it to be there.

I had a bit of trouble getting NV drivers installed - If you try this don't use the ones in the repo, get them off the website.

I did, pretty standard from what I've come to expect with the *buntus.

The CF is very nice btw. I'm ust going to stick with this and see how the dist comes along til full release. Seems they got quite a few bugs fixed. :)

Very nice. CF is just something once you get a taste, you can't work without it. Gotta have CF when I'm using Ubuntu!

2008.0 RC1 is out on the mirrors, and RC2 is to come this week (final possibly in the end of the month). Your card will work out-of-the-box (i have a 8800GTS320Mo which is correctly supported by nvidia100.x drivers, available in Mandriva already during the installation).

Prefer the network install in order to get the most of your system (removable media cannot handle all the packages available except if you use 3/4 DVDs ...).

I've seen reports that the XFi works also, but i have only a SBLive! (which works fine, btw) and i don't suffer the AHCI issue you're mentionning (i have an Asus p5-E+ motherboard).

Plus : you can use the 64bits edition, runs as fast as 32 bits and while needed, the software layer for 32 bits applications is present (like flashplayer for instance).

It must be a chilly day in hell, because Creative just released a 64bit-only
basic ALSA driver for X-Fi. You can get it from their download page.
