Ok guys im alittle stumped as what to do here! ...

In the near future, well when the 9800's are release ive been thinking of doing a mini upgrade! .... my problem is what would be best for me? .. i currently have a E6600@3.0GHz & a 8800GTS(overclocked, see sig) ... now my question to you is this! ..... do i sell my E6600 and put some cash towards a Q6600 OR wait it out and when the 9800's are released do i sell my 8800GTS and put some extra cash towards a 9800GTS & overclock my E6600 some more and keep the E6600? take in mind im a pure gamer!

I know the up-comming games are going to be fully using the Q6600's four cores, games like crysis & far cry 2 ect .... i really dont know what to do, Q6600 or 9800GTS! .... what would you do? .... what as a gamer would i benefit more from? to me it seems like a silly question and to go for the 9800 BUT how will these new gen games run on a dual core & 9800GTs if they are threaded for a quad core?

there are no benchmarks out yet for the 9800GTS, so its hard to tell.

Personally I think I might skip this generation of Video Cards coming up. This 8800GTX is still blazing fast. The only game I seem to be video limited at all in is Crysis. I can deal with that. However, most every game I have is cpu limited(stupid AMD)

With you, i think either way is a winner. You have a fast video card and a fast CPU. Just wait for the benchmarks and decide.

sounds like you got alot money to throw away if your going to pay top doller for a 9800 when it first comes out for a rather small upgrade, why not get both? ^^

Your c2d is allready a really fast cpu, the 9800gtx will give a much bigger boost (and cost twice as much as a q6600 too).

LOL i wish i had money to throw away! ... thats why with me its either the Q6600 OR a 9800GTS! NOT both, its one or the other,... im wondering as a gamer what i would benefit more from! ...... im thinking a 9800GTS may cost around 350 .... hopefully i could get 200 for my card, thats with its bios flashed to 626MHz clock core, 1458MHz shader clock & 1.8GHz on the memory and also it will be sold fitted with this Thermalright HR-03 Plus, then i would only have to put around 150 to a new 9800GTS.

I'd go with the video upgrade.

Unless I'm grossly underestimating the CPU requirements of upcoming games, a 3ghz+ core 2 duo should be excellent. A quad will be better, sure, but I think any Core 2 at 3.2Ghz or more will be "enough" to handle the physics and AI heavy portions of Crysis, UT3 etc.

I know that my Core 2 Duo at 3.6 doubled or tripled (or more) my framerates in CPU heavy areas of some games going from a 2.5Ghz X2. I think a fast dual is definitely the "sweet spot" right now.

Plus, the graphics and effects being used in upcoming games are going to really kick around last year's video cards (yeah, 8800s are that old). You're going to need as much GPU power as you can get to run the latest and greatest at high resolutions and smooth framerates.

Yeah thats what im thining, i know i can get atleast 3.4GHz - 3.5GHz out of this cpu if i really needed to!

How about a Q6600@3.5ghz on air like mine? P95 stable for 8+hrs to boot!

I think the video card will be the much better option. The cpu is always the last part of my PC that gets upgraded.

If you absolutely have to pick one or the other then do as this guy is stating and go with the Video Card as it will make the biggest difference.

Get the Q6600

When do you think the 9800 is coming out?

Well if ur mainboard supports the new PCI Express 3.0 :D

if you can only get one, don't get the q6600.

A 9800 GTS would be a much better idea considering your current cpu.

You have a very fast cpu now.

Plus, the 9800 gts will not only bring more performance, but even better than that, it will give you image quality not possible on an 8 series, or at least I hope.

Since the 9xxx series is still pretty much on paper and you have a good cpu&gpu I'd wait it out.

tbh I would DEFINITLY sell the gts whatever you do.

I dont think that it will hold its strength as time goes by at all.

See if you can get yourself a good price for both of them. Then buy q6600 & GTX.

Should tide you over for a fair bit of time. After this surge of games, it will be quiet for a bit of time, and buying a new gpu will just depreciate wickedly ;)

just my opnion though

I'd grab an Ultra or wait, what you have is plenty fast as is ! I really do not think we will see a GTS 640/GTX sucessor this year.Nvidia has no reason to move forward with a bigger chip, given the success its having with current G80 tech, other then going to 65,or maybe even 55nm would make for even more obscene profit as smaller dies are cheaper to make.I'd love to see a 9800GTX/GTS on 65nm with a decent clockspeed boost of say 30 to 40 percent across the board this year, but highly doubt it.

I do sincerly hope I am proven wrong though ! :o

If the 9800's are not going to be release this year :thumbdwn: i think i will just stick to buying a new antec 900 and another 2GB Corsair DDR2 6400 XMS2 and also upgrade to a Q6600 G0 stepping!

I think I'll go for the video card, or upgrade my processor first. Hmmm. Or motherboard.

If the new cards come out around Nov. will it require pcie 2.0?

ATOJAR
09-13-07, 12:36 PM
Yeah they will be PCI-E 2.0 but ive heard that they are backward compatible.

CaptNKILL
09-13-07, 01:01 PM
They will definitely be backwards compatible. They wouldn't sell if they required motherboards that aren't even out yet.

Dragunov
09-13-07, 01:37 PM
Also with PCI Express 1.0 or only with 1.1?

Technoholic
09-13-07, 02:32 PM
If it's backward compatible then would that means the card won't be working 110%?
