OOPS!
Be careful guys. AthlonXP may commit suicide if Sony abandons the cELL like this.
Don't do it AthlonXP we love you! ... in a messed up sort of way. http://www.pbase.com/gmontem/image/66890430.jpg
AthlonXP1800 what do you have to say about this now that it's confirmed?

It good to see Sony moved the Cell R&D and manufacturing out of Sony in-house for $858M and will use that money to continue invest in design, develop and manufacture future Cell chips, Toshiba will own 80% and Sony 20% of new joint venture company, despited previous rumours about Sony not invest in future Cell designs.
Also Sony and IBM had signed an agreement to have IBM manufacture 45nm Cell chips.

Hey, at least he responded. He usually never comes back to the thread when he's been pwn3d.
And I can't see how this is a good thing for Sony. They're already hurting for money...that ~$900 million is nice, sure, but when they're already bleeding out of every orifice with each PS3 sold adding on the additional costs Toshiba is going to charge them for each Cell processor (and seriously...if you think they won't, you're nuts) is only going to make things worse.
Toshiba'll have their $900 million back in no time.

Toshiba already has a design based on the Cell that makes sense http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/20/toshibas-cell-derived-spursengine-chip-to-process-video/
I'm expecting that if the PS3 doesn't start breaking even by mid next year that Sony will start to exit the console business, just like Sega has done.
note: let me point out that, that is a big IF.

:rofl I highly doubt that will happen. Sony has too much at stake with PS3 and BluRay. Also, PS3's are increasing in sales more and more as time goes by. I'm the furthest thing from a "PS3 Fanboi", but you have to be kidding yourself if you think PS3 is going to "exit" the console business.
I'm with Shake on this one.
Sony is way too big to fall flat on their face like Sega did. They won't give up on the PS3 any time soon.

If they run out money they'll have no choice. Sony is severely strapped for cash. Their financials are horrifying. Size doesn't mean jack **** if you don't have money in the bank and your credit is stretched.

Toshiba financials are worse than Sony, Toshiba do not have money in the bank and their credit already stretched with $10.5bn debts bigger than Sony's $10bn debts. In the last quarter Sony made about $2bn in the bank but Toshiba didnt made any money.
