how high can 8800gtx be overlocked with normal cooler.
how high shader clocks are safe? also what is considered a safe temperature

one more question, comparing cards from the same manufacture.
one has standard clocks, second has 620mhz core, 2000mhz memory.
i know the core and memory could be of course better quality, how about the cooler? even when it looks the same, is it the same?

Actually it really depends on the quality of the thermal paste and if it was properly applied. Mine was horribly applied and thats why I could barely get stable above 605/2000 on the stock cooler but obviously it got a lot better with the HR03+ and proper amount of AS5.
I think 620-630/2000-2020 are realistic with the stock heatsink and proper amount of AS5 on the core and a good quality silicone-based thermal paste on the ram/voltage regulators. IIRC Roadhog even managed 650 on the core with the stock heatsink but I have no idea how stable it was for him.

i wonder will the EVGA warranty be fine if i remove the heatsink and re-apply the paste

The "color" of the paste on the core was grey but a really thick layer (2mm at least), and since AS5 is grey as well I bet they couldnīt tell a difference at all. The paste on the ram/voltage regulators was white mixed with some type of cloth, but I guess you could carefully pull that junk off and store it somewhere and put it back in case you had to do a RMA.
Save temperature seems to be the one that doesnīt cause any artifacts. I heard from guys that were running 90C at load (and stock clocks) and didnīt see any artifacts in games or benchmarks but on hot days I was getting artifacts at 70C (and 660/2050) in some benchmarks but thats with the HR03+. Iīm pretty sure my voltage is holding me back and not really the heatsink. ;)
As long as your card doesnīt cause artifacts or BSODs and goes above 90-100C, Iīm sure you are not doing any damage to it. I believe the same rule applies for the shader clock as well.

not sure about eVGA, but warrenty is voided with BFG

i dont think putting AS5 will help much as the card already has some sort of silver paste on it... also i believe you wont ruin the warranty if you install a 3rd part heatsink on an EVGA card... not sure though... maybe ask jackup?

how high shader clocks are safe? also what is considered a safe temperatureFor some crazy reason, COD2 and FEAR would heat up my GTX to well over 90 degrees and I'd start getting random but infrequent lockups. After going to the Thermalright HR03 Plus the thing never goes over 78 degrees no matter what and I've never had a video lockup since. I also started pushing the O/C higher. I'm running it at 620/2000 all the time. I see others are doing the same.

Well i have HR-03 on my gfx and i have the crazyest fan Delta - FFB 1212 EHE witch gives 200 CFM!. i have reached 702/1084 isnt it amazing... at 702/1084 the max load temp is only 56 and idles at 49.. at normal oc2 clock 626/1000 the max load temp there is 50!!! and idles temp is 42!!!!!! COOLER THAN WATER COOLING OMFG!!!!!!!!!! sorry for my english....
you know css video stress test.... this score i got with LOW oc 650/1033.
LOOK PLEASE 438.17 fps!!!!!! OMG

Your warranty is fine. The only thing that you have to make sure of is that if there is a problem and you have to RMA it that you ship it back with the original cooler installed.

Well I just took the step this weekend of using nibitor and nvflash to overclock at the BIOS level to 620/1000 on my Pny 8800 Gtx. I've been doing that overclock through software ever since I got the card but now that coolbits is gone, ntune sucks on Vista and RivaTuner causes Windows Defender to freak out at every boot I decided to clock the bios. I also upped my shader clock to 1450. I ran 3dmark06 and got just under 12200 so I'm happy for now and I don't have to load any more software to overclock!

i would get Thermalright HR03, but that probably means i would have to get rid of my capture card and maybe the x-fi as well.

Mine did 634 on the core fine with the stock cooler. I'd probably try 1450, 1550 or 1566 on the shader clock.
I use to use ATi Tool to reduce my 2D clock to 350. I had two profiles I created, one was the OC and one was reduced for when the card wasn't doing much. I would use nTune to jack my fan up when I gamed.
When I installed the TR HR-03 Plus I just flashed my card to 659|2040 with a 1566 shader clock and called it a day. I moved to the TR HR-03 Plus because I couldn't stand my 61-64C idle temps, and yes that was even stock speed. The TR HR-03 Plus is great if you don't need those extra PCI slots. I still have one open at the bottom with it installed. Now I idle 45-47C and load 56-58, depending on ambient room temp.
If you want to keep all your slots and cool the card well, look into water cooling.
Below is a great thread for anyone new to flashing a GTX. The best approach is to edit the BIOS that shipped with the card and flash it in. Of course, folks should save said BIOS in its pristine state.

yes water cooling is ok. its not noicy... but my fan and HR-03 " Delta - FFB 1212 EHE" makes my gfx oc2 load at 56 cc MAX.. so its allot cooler than water cooling.. but omg its loud...
The Thermalright H0-3 Pulse is a stealer cooler but mind you it will put ll that heat into your PC case and take up 4 slots while doing it :thumbdwn: I had my GTX at a core clock of 670 running high temps of 67C but I went back to the stock cooler due to heat concerns on the CPU end. If any one is interested in a H0-3 Pulse I have one floating around here ;)

"A lot cooler than water?" Hardly. At stock settings on my Ultra my card loads at 54C. With it clocked to 700|1836|2300 it loads at 58C. And that's with my quad in the loop with it.
When I had my GTX before, it loaded at 51C when overclocked to 650|2100.
A good water setup will always be more effective than the best air-cooled heatsink money can buy.

Yea air is never better than water - I don't care what you're smoking.
I didn't even realize the shader would run 1800!! I stopped at 1566, do you have some information on the shader clocks after 1566? I couldn't find any documentation on further steps (like the ram and core that clock in steps).
Anyways I got my GTX to 621/1566/1054 right now, flashed. With a B3 Q6600 @ 3.5Ghz my GTX still runs 38 idle, 43 - 44 loaded. Using a PA120.2 rad though and MCW60 with Fuzion on the CPU.

Man it really flies when you overclock the shaders. Fo' real. Jericho stays pinned at my refresh rate on highest settings w/ 4x edge-smoothing enabled.
You can overclock the shaders individually with the latest RivaTuner. You may want to see if you can push yours more, because I have a friend with a GTX who's hit 1700 on the shaders. Here's mine:

What happens when the shaders get pushed too far? Lockup, artifacts?

Don't know. Haven't found the ceiling on her yet. :) I've been increasing them a little at a time just to make sure it's stable with all of my games.
I would guess that's what will happen, though.

artifacts when pushed too far... mine tops out at 1620... not bad considering the core cant overclock over 620mhz even with my HR-03 Plus

You could always do what im going to do when i get my antech 900!
Right now i have my fan so the HR-03 Plus heatsink is below the card! .... when i get my antech 900 im going to turn my Ultra-120 eXtreme around so the warm air from the ultra 120 is blowing up to the top of the case and onto the big 200mm fan, then im going to put my HR-03 Plus so that the heatsink is above the card(how you would have it with SLi)then below the card i have a Spectrum dual Fan card(see below pic), this card mounts in a pci slot and will blow cool air onto the underside of my graphics card keeping the memory & other components cool, this dual fan card only takes up one slot leaving you afew extra pci slots for sound cards ect.

That won't work too well, I don't think. You need the heatsink sitting over the GPU.. not the back of the card.
my shader stops at 19xx i do not remember exact nr but it dos nothing
il tryed to just overclock shaders and a run of 3dmark05 and it did just 100 points from defoult shader on ultra to 19xx and just 100points
