This weekend I reinstalled Halo again, but for the first time on Vista. Compared to XP, it runs like mud. The frame rates are at least half in some areas and I'm getting corruption in some shadows and various textures.

I've tried setting the clock speeds to stock, I've run it in XP Compatibility mode, I've tried a few different drivers and still it plays very poorly in Vista.

For the heck of it, I tried it in my XP partition again to rule out the hardware and it plays butter smooth in XP.

Ok, so, Vista is the problem but why? A game this old should run pretty good I'd think. Anyone else try Halo:CE under Vista?

Your rig and mine are pretty close (X2 4400 and GTS, 2 gigs OCZ 3200, and it's super smooth on mine @ 1920x1200. This was on 64 and 32 bit. But I haven't tried it with any of the latest drivers either. Halo 2 was less than impressive though.

halo has HUGE problems if you try to force AA on it. disable AA in control panel and try again.

Also, the character animations are capped at 30fps, one of the biggest annoyances. It's been collecting dust in my cabinet for a while now.

Grey_1 tipped me off that maybe its just the newer drivers. I only tried the 16x.xx drivers on this. Maybe the 15x.xx series are better for Halo.

Now I have to install it so I can test it. :p

Never a bad reason to play Halo. :D

ok, with the 163.44, 1920x1200 and all else maxed but vsync off, as I hardly see a difference in this game without it.

Man, you're pegged at 60! Something is up. I may have to install the 163.44's again to see if thats it. Mine will sometimes be running smooth at 60, then suddenly drop to, say, maybe 12 or so. Its random.

People still play Halo 1 online? Maybe I should reinstall the game....

With a 7900gtx or 7950gx2, I would be at 90-300fps, so yes, something is wrong.

I haven't seen any drops and I've played through twice on Vista.

Oh, I'm running it with NO patches installed. Maybe worth a shot??

You have all the performance & reliability patches in Vista installed right? My Vista install is from the first week of August. I'm stumped as to what may have gone wrong to kill off performance in the game. On the otherhand, I'm not seeing any gameplay issues in any other game except some slowdowns in Airborne, but thats expected with my grey around the temples CPU scheduled for retirement this fall.

Plays fine here... Win7 64. I know it played fine on Vista 64 as well.

64 bit.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I use the SM2.0 switch. It's in the readme located in the root Halo folder.

I believe there was a Vista specific patch for this game from Microsoft. Have you tried that?

When i used to play this game would run fine for me, Vista 32. Plus my specs are a lot lower than all of yours.

For future reference the fix for this issue is to turn off "decals" in the video settings. For whatever reason using a newer NVIDIA card + Vista + Halo Combat Evolved with "decals" enabled causes massive framerate fluctuations.

This does not happen using Windows XP, however, I am not sure if this is an issue with Windows 7.

Never had this issue on Vista or Win7.
