I installed the nvidia drivers for the Redhat 9 kernel (2.4.20-8) using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run, and everything went smoothly (though the installer insisted on removing the old drivers, preventing previous kernels from working).

Redhat today issued an errata kernel, 2.4.20-9, and the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run failed trying to install (see attached log).

Yes, I installed the kernel source and configured it.

well, i did the same thing...i did this to install the new driver.
./NVIDIA-blah-blah --uninstall
./NVIDIA-blah-blah -k 2.4.20-9
and it compiled it for that kernel version.

My kernel source tree was screwed up. I reinstalled the source and the compile went fine. Sorry about the noise.

I was going to ask you about that. My kernel update and driver reinstall went perfectly.

I did not need to do an explicit uninstall. I just ran the install again and the installer found the "old" version and uninstalled it for me. It worked perfectly.

I did that too when I got the new kernel update. You Guy's DID reinstall the driver from TEXT mode WITHOUT 'X' running didn't you??

My install ran great.. No problems..

I'm having problems with this new kernel. With the 2.4.20-8 kernel I installed the driver without kernel headers. But when I try to install it with the 2.4.20-9 kernel it can't find a precompiled package.

Will there be a precompiled package?

Just install the kernel source for 2.4.20-9 and the driver will recompile it for you.

Just temporarily edit the XF86Config to use the nv driver and install the kernel source from the CD. Then use up2date to update it from the Redhat site.

(Go into the System Settings menu then choose the Add/Remove Applications icon. Once this has run, go into the Development section and install the Kernel Development package which will install the kernel source and three other packages. (I aways do that on a clean install, as it WILL be needed at some time or other.)) Then use the up2date utility to upgrade the kernel source to the new one.

The once you have done that, reboot into the NEW kernel (In TEXT mode (Mode 3)) and rerun the Nvidia driver installer and it will recompile and install the driver for the new kernel. ALSO, remember to re-edit the XF86Config back the use the nvidia driver before you run X.

Yeah I know that I have to install the kernel source. But since 2.4.20-8 didn't need it I was wondering if there will be a precompiled package for 2.4.20-9.

But thx for your reply :)

I'd still just install the kernel source. The need to rebuild the nvidia driver will NOT be the only program that will need the kernel source. Waiting around to get the precompiled binaries is a waste of time. Easier to just install it, and your up and running.

I had the 4191 drivers running on my RH8.0 long before Nvidia put up the precompiled binaries. If I had waited, I would basically had a useless system.

Yes, soon.

Binaries are now up - the installer should pull them down automatically.
