is it safe for those 2 cards to have their fans blocked like that?

That's what I was thinking, that middle card is gonna be friggin toasty!!

That is so retarded. Why don't they focus on improving the performance gained from SLi first.

Improving drivers doesn't automatically bring in revenue, selling a third card does.

+1. In fact, "retarded" is a vast understatement.

Hardware Vendor: "Hey, let's stack 3 cards together so that they'll reach even higher temps and further the diminishing returns!"

Yes it would considering that SLi has a low attachment rate right now. If they were to improve its performance gains then more people would buy into SLi.

I actually think if they gave better IQ (e.g. more options) with sli then more people would buy 2 cards.

It can be kind of hard to get the performance a whole lot higher, b/c your gpu is one component (although the most important component, but still), so you really can't exactly get 2X performance very easily.

Sure, but this factor primarily driven by 3rd party software. The perceived value of SLI is lower today than it was during the 6 and 7 series because the high end 8 series can handle most modern games by itself.

Obviously neither of us have statistics to back our case, but I guarantee the bean counters at Nvidia do. If the product comes to market there is a financial reason behind it.

Either way, performance has to be proved to the average consumer and most may not take the time to even read into how much performance they get. However, you and I both know that people will look at a bigger number and assume superiority. In this case 3 > 2

Anyway for all we know this could be an internal test thing. It's not like we haven't been promised this before.

This is the end result of AMD falling down on the job... :thumbdwn: Forget more high end single chip cards, now the answer is sell us more of the same and call it improved SLI.

Common Larabee,Nvidia needs a solid kick in the rear...

edit: and this fool,is this > . < close to buying a eVGA ULTRA come Dec.

Marketing marketing marketing.

I'm sure all the enthusiasts will rush out to deal with another flaky NV chipset and shove 3 hot ass cards on it. The will also love the wonderful on board sound/NIC/RAID by NV because there is no friggen room for anything else.

SLI in Vista is very underwhelming for me right now. I think I will go single card for my next upgrade.

Well Crysis is the make or break game for me in SLI since its about the only game, beta or otherwise, that really needs it.

you going to spend 1000$ for one game?

No, it means since I am not satisfied with how SLI is working in Vista overall I will go single card for my next upgrade instead of SLI and as a result of having crappy SLI support for Crysis it would be the last "nail in the coffin" for me so to speak.

Good point - I am guessing they expect you to use onboard maybe?

The only way I can see this working safely with the current cards is with a water cooled setup, which would also solve the blocked slot problem.

For this to sell, they are going to have to at least change the fan design. But you godda ask, if the 9800(?) is so powerful, why the hell would you need 3 cards anyway? It's also looking like the new top-end card is gonna be of dual PCB design, which would make it even less feasible!

If that's true then i hope they don't have the 2 cards sandwiched together.

It's a good idea if they use 2 cards as long as they split the transistors up wisely.

I guess maybe it would work out something like the shader core and ram on one board, and the rest of the core on the other board.

I think that's what they should've been doing a long time ago.

If engineered wisely unlike nvidia's and also unlike ati's other products, then maybe one board could even be single slot.

Guess this means I need two more blocks and a 7xxi board.....

I have a hard time to justify buying second GTX card cause my single card does a damn good job. All games i play i use highest settings and with average cpu such as 6000+ my system screams, not to mention people with Core 2 3Ghz+ cpus. Rich people will of course get this setup.

I wonder about third card...maybe it's used for physics only?

Maybe 3-way SLI scales better then regular SLI under Vista? You never know with the new driver model...

It would be nice to see Ageia Physics chip and Xi-Fi chip integrated onboard. Man that would be an awesome ;)

Not sure how to cool those three cards...and PSU you need for this?
