You guys catch this?
I think it was a dirty hit on several reasons. I like physical play, but this was a tad too far. I didnt see anyone (players, or coaches from other teams) saying this was a clean hit.
He did several things wrong, went for the head, left his feet, AND THE GUY DIDN'T EVEN HAVE THE PUCK. In hockey, if you dont have the puck and get checked, its considered interference. The guy never even played 1 game of professional hockey, and the guy that got hit, was also concussed in the Stanley Cup finals. He was knocked out cold, and the fight that happened after the hit, was basically happening on top of him.
I say ban him for life. There is no room for this.

He's Canadian, who cares! (I'm seriously joking)

That was a very bad hit. I don't know about cheap, in every aspect, but the guy clearly passed the puck off way before the hit, plus the dip**** that hit him left his damn feet! Oh boy, this is going to be a good season! I love teh NHL season and I'm all ready for it.

The biggest reason would be that i wear glasses, and I cant at all wear contacts, other then that, i am being real busy with college and other things. Also you do have to purchase lots of equipment. I did go through a phase when i was 14-16 when i enjoyed limited contact roller hockey. Was a blast, even though i was awful :D

i see. a goalie friend of mine also spends fortunes on pads and such.

Lots of people dont realize, but when you play tennis competitively, it also get very expensive, raquest strings break every week basically, ($20-$30), new shoes wear out every 4 months, about (130 $), new raquests every 2 years, (3 x 200). Accessories such as bag and other things....Costs rise very quickly.
Gah sports is expensive. Makes me really feel sorry for kids whose parents dont have money to get them involved in sports. I always donate to charities that specialize in giving opportunities for lower income families to enroll their kids in sports activities.

Yes that is very true. It is especially with younger kids, that spend fortunes on top-of-the-line stuff even though their skill level would not let them you that extra quality of equipment. I guess every little kid is kind of like that. They just want to emulate stars they see on television. Problem is parents end up loosing lots and lots of money. I am pretty sure, at a national/semi-national level, until you get sponsorships, its is very expensive for almost any sport.

I actually just started coaching tennis. It is very popular in Vancouver because some young tennis prodigies grew up here, and there are many wealthy foreign families that want to teach the game to their kids. It is very good money but sometimes the parents turn into what looks like a pack of animals. Ripping their kid up after a bad match or after a bad practice, it really hurts to see that. When i was around 12 and playing tons of tournaments, I saw that alot, and even my dad sometimes argued with me after bad losses. I never held it against him though. He was trying to help me. Alot of parents, they seem "evil", but they are just trying to help their kid. OOOOhhhhhh, I will never forget those long rides in the car........:o :)

well, Downie was suspended for 20 games .... not that it will change the behaviour of other players on the ice. there is a general lack of respect amongst the players today. with all the padding they wear, almost like body armour, they must feel almost invulnerable.

also, when you have 10 6'4" 220 pound players skating around a small rink at high speeds, stuff will always happen in a high intensity game. the NHL really missed the boat: in the last 10 to 15 years, nearly every team has built new arena. instead of increasing the rink to Olympic size, they kept the NHL dimensions, which helped bog down the game in the clutch and grab era.

also, the reason they didnt go with the european size rink is that it would turn the hard hitting game into a soccer like sport were every one passes and does nothing put tries to setup the play and stays away from using the body.
