I notice in the release notes for Xfree86 4.3 that they include support for the nForce2 IGP. I used the Nvidia integrated graphics drivers for my EPoX EP-8RGA motherboard and fried my monitor (think I should sue?). So, I was thinking of just using Xfree86 4.3 and eschewing the Nvidia drivers. What do you all think? Which is better in terms of stability, performance, etc.?

the xfree driver 'nv' is only 2D.

i had never _any_ problems using the original drivers from nvidia. and i am maintaining a network from 20+ pcs currently equiped with nvidia cards.
and the nvidia driver supports 3D.

if you do not run 3d apps i would say the xfree driver is sufficient.

to the monitor: if you enter the correct sync rates (hor. and vert.) in your XF86Config you shouldn't have any problems.

I used the same XF86Config file that worked fine for years, just changing the driver name and commenting out drm and whatever, as described in the instructions. When I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go from X to a console the monitor fizzed and went black.

You may have had success with Nvidia graphics cards, but have you ever used a motherboard with an on-board graphics controller? That may be different. In fact, it may be a problem introduced by the motherboard manufacturer.
