Per VR-Zone (http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/Nvidia_Plans_New_GeForce_8800_GTS_SKU/5311.html), the 8800GTS 640 will be getting a performance bump in the form of more stream processors (112) in an effort to differentiate it from the upcoming 8800GT.
I think they need to rename it, too. That's a pretty major change to keep the same name. It should be an 8850GTS or something. If not, there'll be the 8800GTS 320, the 8800GTS 640 (96sp) and the 8800GTS 640 (112sp). Too confusing.
"What video card do you have?"
"An 8800GTS..." That should be all you need to say, IMHO.

Too bad you can't change it so it's like so:
8800GTS (For the 320), 8800GTS^2 (For the 640) 8800GTS Ultra (For the 112sp). That would be kinda less confusing, don't you think?

That would be kinda less confusing, don't you think? That would be better, but I think once you start changing the actual specs of the GPU, it needs a different name/number. I can live with the same name for cards with different memory amounts, or even different clock speeds, but not different components of the core.
Hopefully nVIDIA will see fit to give this "new" 8800GTS 640 a new moniker.
EDIT: Sadly, it doesn't appear that they are going to (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20071003223755.html):“Nvidia will not be doing any formal launch activities, press announcements, web-site updates, or any other marketing around this new SKU. Partners can conduct their own marketing activities around the SKU as they see fit,” an Nvidia statement for partners cited by Mobile01 (http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=298&t=413501&last=3743328)web-site reads. If they were going to rename it, I think there'd be some launch-related marketing.
Yeah they should rename it otherwise it'll get confusing for the consumer.
Maybe 8800GTR would be nice heh ... 8850 will sound higher than the 8800GTX/Ultra i think.
GTR = honda with neon paint and Folgers Coffee can for an exhaust pipe! Avoid, avoid, avoid! :D

They should call it the GeForce 8800 GTSXSX2TxTtSXxT

Hard to remember all this , it should be shorter.

Nah too plain. Tack on another S, and another T, and another X, a few Gs for good measure, and then get creative with capitalization and you end up with what I put earlier. :)

8800 GTS2
Anyway, I don' think it's fair for owners of older 8800GTS 640MB cards and it sure doesn't help with reselling the card.

I'm not sure how it's not fair to older owners but it definitely would add confusion since a lot of people would wonder what the price difference is.
My vote goes for 8800GTU. :)
Actually, I just thought about it, anyone want to venture they might bring the GTO back?

GTO sounds good.
Problem with GTO is that it was originally below the GT when it was last used in the 6 series.
There was a Geforce 2 GTS-V. That easily distinguishes it but doesn't change the current name too much. Although the GTS-V was slower than the GTS, maybe they could make it s GTS-X, or GTS-R, my car's a GTS-X :P
GTS2 640 sounds OK to me.
Anyway, why are they just uprating the current cards? Arn't we due a new series of cards now, 8800's have been out for ages.

I don't think it's not fair, I surtainly won't be selling my cards and loosing a load of money for a few more stream processors.
Nvidia kills 8800GTS 320MB, relaunches 640MB! (http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/10/05/nvidia-kills-8800gts-320mb)
