GeForce2 0x01a0 & 96.43.01 works badly

I have upgraded a driver of my GeForce2 and it works badly. X.org starts but the desktop is unusable. See screenshots A and B. (A looks much better than B because Firefox is much less sensitive to this error than for example KDE applications.) Log file attached. Feel free to request more specific data.

May be I missed some settings. Or there is a real bug in driver and I won't be able to set the driver and X.org to make them working? As far as I remember, last version I used before was 1.0-8776.

Re: GeForce2 0x01a0 & 96.43.01 works badly

There were many drivers released between 1.0-8776 & 96.43.01. Which was the last driver in that interval where this problem was not present?

1.0-8776 did not work with a 2.6.22 kernel. As such, I'm assuming that you've upgraded at least the kernel since you last used 1.0-8776. What else on this system has changed?

Does this problem persist if you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf ?

I'd also like to see a bug report against 1.0-8776 when this problem was not present.

Thanks for a quick reply. I know the driver was old but it worked so I did not have many reasons to change it. It is possible that I used also other drivers (1.0-9762 or 1.0-9639 ? I do not remember, sorry). I had to upgrade this time because the driver which I used, was removed from Gentoo repository a couple of weeks ago). I will try to find out how to install them and then I will provide the requested data. I will also try to set NvAGP=0 now.

I made a quick test and I can report that the problem remains when NvAGP=0. See attached log.

I should also to mention that when I changed the driver, I did not change the kernel.

1.0-8776 did not support 2.6.22. How did you get this to work?

As I wrote, probably I used some other driver version with this kernel (it is just the version which I remember I used before). I have already prepared my system to install older versions and find out which works. But I am busy, I will be able to do it in couple of days. Please, be patient. Thank you for your care and quick answers anyway.

So far, I tested these versions:

1.0.9639 - gets frozen after the nVidia logo appears.

1.0.9746 - I cannot modprobe it even when it was compiled ok:
Code:

# modprobe nvidia -v
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/video/nvidia.ko NVreg_DeviceFileMode=432 NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=VIDEOGID NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles=1
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/video/nvidia.ko): Invalid argument

All these arguments should be ok. Without them I get:
Code:

insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/video/nvidia.ko': -1 No such device
which is no surprise.

1.0.8762 is blocked in my Gentoo now because of too new version x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.99 package :-(.

I would like to test 1.0.8776 and 1.0.9626 later.

Please install the official NVIDIA driver package if Gentoo isn't providing their own.

jd3010,
I'd recommend starting a new thread for your problem after following the instructions in the forum sticky posts.

Just did so, I will try to attach the files later, but I think it is just a matter of knowing where to lauch the *.run file .... still a newbee in Linux

I am too experiencing the same problem with the same card, where old drivers worked (i think last linux nvidia driver that i used was 7796 or something like that).

Here is the link to my thread:
A7N266-VM : Geforce 2 MX Onboard : Freeze at NVIDIA Logo

Sorry if I am intruding into your thread, but am just happy to know that it's not the hardware that is at fault for me.
