Video stuttering in mplayer on GeForce 7300 SE

I'm running an Ubuntu 7.10 box (Gutsy) with a GeForce 7300 SE card hooked to a Dell 2001FP flat panel with DVI.

kernel: Linux tempest 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

The machine has a Core 2 Quad 2.4ghz with 4 gig of memory, but when I run mplayer on an HD video stream (captured using an HD-3000 tuner card), the video stutters and the X server uses 100% of its CPU. My mplayer args:

mplayer -framedrop -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc -ac hwac3 ...

and mplayer spews stuff like this:

A:23064.6 V:23060.4 A-V: 4.179 ct: 0.247 75/ 75 14% 0% 260.9% 14 0
Too many video packets in the buffer: (141 in 8418036 bytes).
Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.
A:23064.7 V:23060.4 A-V: 4.284 ct: 0.250 76/ 76 15% 0% 262.2% 14 0
Too many video packets in the buffer: (141 in 8432932 bytes).

If I capture the stream with dd and play the file, then everything works fine. Should I be using a different video driver? Any other suggestions on how to make realtime video playback not stutter and chew CPU time?

Thanks!

Oh, I should have mentioned, things are no better if I use xv instead of xvmc.
