A7N266-VM : Geforce 2 MX Onboard : Freeze at NVIDIA Logo

1 Attachment(s)
I have been facing problems with NVIDIA Legacy 96.XX drivers for a while. I am using ASUS A7N266VM with Geforce 2 MX Onboard GPU.

Whenever I install 96.XX drivers on any Linux system, system freezes at the NVIDIA logo. The only way to get out is hard boot.

I have attached logs below. Let me know if any additional information is required here.

Attachment 28648

PS: Please ignore xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log from nvidia-bug-report.log. I have attached these files separately. What you might see in nvidia-bug-report.log is the working configuration for the "nv" driver.

There's nothing attached to your post, however your nvidia-bug-report.log should reflect the configuration of the system that reproduces the issue. If it does not, then the bug report is not valid.

This bug report is against the 'nv' X driver, not the nvidia X driver. Also, 1.0-9639 is no longer supported. Please see the forum sticky posts.

I managed to install 9643 Legacy drivers on my Ubuntu 7.10. There is a little bit of improvement in terms of system response.

Though X still freezes at NVIDIA Logo, I could move mouse pointer without any issues. That was not possible with previous driver releases.

I have attached a new nvidia-bug-report below. I hope this time I got it right.

I had to generate it in Ubuntu recovery mode, since the system had to be cold started.

Re: A7N266-VM : Geforce 2 MX Onboard : Freeze at NVIDIA Logo

According to this bug report, you're using 1.0-7185, not 96.43.

Re: A7N266-VM : Geforce 2 MX Onboard : Freeze at NVIDIA Logo

Even I couldnt understand why this bug report is showing 7185 and not 9643. I installed 9643 just now and AFAIT nvidia-installer should remove all previous versions of drivers.

But if you scroll through the log you would see that it's loading 9643 nvidia modules only.

Also could you pass on any instructions on how to clear up unwanted nvidia modules, if possible?

Thanks a lot for your patience. But I really am having issues with Legacy drivers and have switched 10 distros in last 2 weeks. This time i want to get right and get it done.

Please help.

Re: A7N266-VM : Geforce 2 MX Onboard : Freeze at NVIDIA Logo

nvidia-installer removes all parts of the driver which are installed via nvidia-installer. However, if you're using Ubuntu, you've got bits of the driver elsewhere, and they will not get removed (or more precisely, will get reinstalled every time you reboot). This is a Ubuntu bug which has been documented in the forum sticky posts (as well as many other threads on this forum).

About the only thing that I can blindly suggest for your instability, is to set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf. Until you can attach a bug report that actually reflects the configuration that you are running, I can't comment further.

Thanks for the help netllama. I think I missed that sticky.

Apologies for inconvenience caused.

BTW, I think I messed up with system too much. I will reinstall Ubuntu and regenerate all the logs tomorrow. Gotta catch some shut eye.

Thanks again for your solid patience.

I got it working finally. But before I had to
  • Remove all Linux-restricted-modules packages
  • Add option "NVAGP" "1" to xorg.conf

But now I am facing a new problem here. The screen is a bit sluggish and get corrupted as soon as some animation appears. Also when I scroll, all the pixels get overlapping everything becomes messy.

I have attached nvidia-bug-report for your reference. Also attached are two screenshots which would give you the idea of screen corruption.

screenshots
I noticed an error message in "dmesg", it says, NVAGP not loading since AGPGART is already loaded in the backend.

I tried with agpgart=no in grub when booting, but didnt work. :thumbdwn:

glxgears works fine without any quirks, and gives me a constant 405 FPS.

What could be the reason of corruption? Is it only because of AGPGART loading in the backend? or is there any issue with my configuration?

Please retest with NvAGP set to 0.
