8400M GS : Low performances

1 Attachment(s)
Hello, I just purchased an Acer Aspire 7720G with a Nvidia 8400M GS on it to have kickass 3D effects.
Unfortunately, 3D effects are slow, which make them unusable.

This problem seems to be common to all 8400M GS cards, here is an example :

Any Nvidia tech, here is a bug report, please help.

Thanks !

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

first of all, the 8400 IS slow. No matter what you do, you have a slow graphic solution. So what do you expect? 7600 like performance? Nope, you won't get it.

Second, this does not look good:
reg00: base=0xfffe0000 (4095MB), size= 128KB: write-protect, count=1
reg01: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1
reg02: base=0x7ff00000 (2047MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1

??? maybe some mtrr-wizard can say something about this, but IMHO it looks fishy.

third:
[ 355.972000] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)
<snip>
[ 2002.716000] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)

ouch, with some sata errors, yay. are you using s3 or suspend to disk?

Hello, and thank you for answering.

Well I do not expect incredible rending from my graphic card, I just want 3D desktop effects to be nice. I have a ****ty Aspire 3023WLMi with a lame ATI X700 on it, and 3D effects are running smoother than on my brand new computer.
You can thus understand I am kind of pissed about this.

I do not use s3. As for "suspend to disk" I don't really know. gnome-power-manager supports it but I do not know how to see if it is enabled or disabled.

As for

reg00: base=0xfffe0000 (4095MB), size= 128KB: write-protect, count=1
reg01: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1
reg02: base=0x7ff00000 (2047MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1

I found out that mtrr's are Memory Type Range Registers but I don't know how to deal with these and don't get your mtrr-wizard thing. (keep in mind I'm just an advanced user, not an expert)

I still believe there is a problem with the support of this card. I've read a lot of posts that were dealing with the same problem on a 8400M GS.

Thank God there is wikipedia so I can understand what IMHO means, we don't use that much in France :D

Thank you for helping

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

I do know what MTRR are, and IMHO they look wrong. Wrong MTRR means no performance at all. But I do not know anything about the 'correct' MTRR settings. So your settings may be ok. But as I said, IMHO they look fishy. And I hope someone else might say something about that.

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

For what it's worth, my MTRRs are similar to this user's and I get reasonable performance (besides the slowness with texture handling inherent in the drivers):

ben@mercury ~ $ cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x7ff00000 (2047MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1

Just another data point,

- Ben

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

So, anyone knows where this might be coming from ?
By the way I figured that I get 1200FPS when compiz is runing, while I get around 3000FPS with metacity... Is that normal ?

I've googled my slow compiz issue, and I see a lot of folks are facing the same problem than me, and no one has a solution yet...

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

if you mean 'glxgears FPS', yes that is normal.

I have a geforce 8800 GTX and having the same problem... don't give us bull**** that the 8xxx series is slow...

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

Yes, indeed.
Before I buy my computer, I read that the 8400M GS was a pretty "fast" card for a laptop.

Anyway, if any nvidia tech could have a look on this, that would be appreciated.

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

Add me to the long line of people with 8-series cards who wants to fix this...

Come to think of it.. should a petition be in order?

Re: 8400M GS : Low performances

Does anyone know how often nvidia update their drivers ?
That would give me an idea of when this issue might be fixed.

BTW I've run Compiz Fusion enough now to say it is absolutely unusable until this problem is fixed :thumbdwn:

Re: 8400M GS : Low performences

What exactly is slow? I don't have any 8xxx card to test but I see no reason why it should be slower than the 7xxx ones.
