8700M GT supported ?
I just wanted to know if the 8700M GT is currently supported on linux (I actually own a Dell M1730), because, right after a fresh install of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, and the installation of Nvidia drivers, I can see GDM, but 10 to 20 secs after the login it crashes(with gnome panels appearing very slowly), and the ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to the terminal crashes the box too...
If anyone could answer me ... thanks in advance. |
Re: 8700M GT supported ?
I've tried the "Restricted Drivers" under Ubuntu 7.10 with poor results. The entire machine hangs for several seconds whenever there is ANY GUI action, such as dropping down a menu, closing a window, clicking on a button, etc. Luckily you can (eventually) disable the restricted driver and everything works again, but no 3d effects.

See the forum sticky posts.

Please also make sure you're using the most recent graphics drivers with support for your GPU (at the time of this writing, 100.14.19).

Re: 8700M GT supported ?
OK, I meticulously went through and followed all the steps in the forum sticky posts for installing on Ubuntu and successfully installed the 100.14.19 Linux drivers from NVidia. I still can't turn on Compiz or other special visual effects. When I try to turn them on I get the pop-up saying that I have to enable the restricted driver. If I do, the system behaves exactly as it did before. Any other ideas?
