HD DVD vs. Bluray - what's the staus?
 

Hey everyone!

I hope this is the right forum. I want to give my dad the first season of either Lost, Prison Break or Heroes and I think I'll end up with heroes. He's a hifi tech nerd (or he has been at least) and he says he waits until there's a clear winner before he buys an HD-DVD or Bluray player. Some time ago I felt that the sentiments in here on nVnews lied with HD DVD (not least because of evil chris I guess :p), but what's it like now with many several firms having changed sides or so I've heard, Blockbuster selling Bluray exclusive etc., but I can see that I can only get Heroes on HD DVD. I want to do that, but not if Bluray is gonna win the format war and my dad ends up buying a bluray player instead. So...? :)

At this moment, Blu-ray is winning but who knows. Rumors that Warner Brothers' considering moving to Blu-ray only since most of their titles sells more on Blu-ray than HD-DVD. A lot of online sites or retailers drops HD-DVD because Blu-ray sells well. Local BestBuy had expanded Blu-ray while HD-DVD remains the same. Blu-ray has more studio suppoters than HD-DVD.

This holiday, stuff is looking good for Blu-ray. Also keep it in mind, several studios finally get in picture feature on Blu-ray so now HD-DVD isn't only one that has those features. :) Blu-ray is catching up quickly and offers what HD-DVD is currently offering. I noticed HD-DVD movies price is slightly more than Blu-ray movies... hmm.

Ok I also heard stuff like that.. but I also heard something about Paramount (I think it was) suddenly going from undecided mode to full-HD DVD supporter mode, which should be just as big of a blow to Bluray as the Blockbuster-Bluray love was to HD DVD.

I dunno I haven't really been following this for the past year, I just hope that things were clearing up and that a clear winner could be foretold at present =)

Yeah, everyone was surprised to hear Dreamworks/Paramount moved to HD-DVD exclusive. Rumors that they were paid to become exclusive (I think). Too bad Transformer didn't sell well or even beat Blu-ray best sellers.

Just get him a HD-DVD player and Heroes. By the time the war is settled, you'll probably have a PC that can rip and burn to whatever format is the winner anyway.

I dunno about that, he's pretty serious with 15,000$ projector, the DVD player he bought he imported from US cost him around the same I belive and I don't even wanna guess the price on his line doubler and other ****. He's not the type who rips and plays and such, when he uses a total amount of 50k$ (at least) of a pro home cinema in his basement, he's not the type who doesn't wanna dish out 30-50$ for at movie.

So I want to make the right choice here. Lets see about all three cool series I'm watching atm:

Coming as bluray:
Lost
Prison Break

Coming as HD DVD:
Heroes

That's 2 to 1. I only just started on Prison Break, I like Lost a lot, but I really, really also like Heroes. He's actually specifically said that he wants to watch the whole 24 series at some point and as far as I can see that's also coming to Bluray only. God damnit, decisions, decisions... (ack)

I am waiting for a hybrid player to come out for under $200. Nuff said.

Exactly! Besides his basement home cinema he does have a very decent 50" 1080p-capable HDTV with an excellent picture IMO, he's just making excuses IMO, it's getting annoying :D
So giving him either a Bluray Movie or an HD-DVD movie could push him to just do something about it! Actually I do consider just telling him "father I won't give you a birthday present at this time, however I will give you a double value chrismas present", then give him both an HD-DVD and Bluray movie for chrismas :lol:

Yeah could be fun... But really I want to have an idea of which format has the best chance if I decide to go buy him an HD DVD/Bluray movie for this saturday :)
