DeepDiscount.com has the BBC Video Planet Earth: Complete Collection on DVD for $54 - 20% with coupon code DDAF [Exp 11/25] = $43 with free shipping. This release includes all the episodes (5 DVDs) from the original BBC production, as well as an extra 90 minutes of footage not seen in the original show. Narrated by David Attenborough rather than Mrs. Alien (in the US version). The HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions are $53 after coupon.
I just bought the Blu-Ray version for $53. Smoking deal for the entire series!

Tyger I recommend the Discovery version over the BBC. David Attenborough is annoying as hell.

From what I've read. The Discovery version has a lower quality picture. Thats why I chose this version. I was not aware of the commentating being annoying...

It might because I saw the shows on Discovery HD first... so they grew on me. BTW I didn't notice a PQ difference.

Quick snipet on the Discovery Channel version

The bad news, however, is twofold. Though evident in the original BBC/Warner releases as well, this US version has a much harder time resolving fine detail in dark scenes, where video noise often runs rampant. Some nighttime sequences look a bit more blurry and flat compared to the rest of the program. Blacks can also appear a bit gray in these scenes, and contrast doesn't have nearly the same pop as the brilliant majority of 'Planet Earth.'

Even more troubling is that Discovery's US edition has more obvious noise and edginess. For example, during the penultimate episode "Earth's Forests," there is a breathtaking scene tracking a redwood all the way from trunk to tree-top. On the BBC/Warner encode, the image is generally solid, with no apparent jaggies. The Discovery version, however, has unfortunate jitter, and some slight pixelization is evident.

Simply put, this 1080i encode is clearly the inferior choice given the source material, and it's certainly enough to knock a full star off the Video rating for the US version. For the complete 'Planet Earth' video experience, the BBC edition remains unmatched.

That's only because you're American. Attenborough is a joy to listen to. I still prefer to listen to Patrick Stewart to narrate a documentary, but you can't allways have it your way.

I have seen the whole series on normal DVD (when I house-sitted someone else's house) and can really recommend this.

Patrick Stewart is a VERY good narrator for documentaries.

Patrick Stewart can do excellent voice-overs of just about anything.

I once got a compliment from my English professor that I'd make a very good news-caster ... Well what can I say. I've got a face for radio.

He sounds like a raspy old fart. Sigourney has a much more soothing, easy listening voice.

And Sharon Stone is much better than Sigourney. So it all comes down to sex appeal, doesn't it.
