Can't get 1680x1050 on my FX5500--help?

1 Attachment(s)
I've got a 256M GeForce FX5500 on my Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10) system, using the proprietary nVidia drivers installed via the restricted drivers utility, version 1.0-9639. Today I purchased a Samsung SynchMaster 206BW LCD monitor, rated at 1680x1050 pixels. I've got it connected using the DVI connector.

However, I can't get the nVidia to drive the monitor at full capacity; the best I can get is 1440x900. I've found a web log which said that they had success driving the monitor at 1680x1050@60MHz by adding:
Code:

Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck"
to my xorg.conf file, which I did; but it didn't make any difference. I also added
Code:

Option "UseEdidFreqs" "False"
which also didn't seem to help.

I've attached my nvidia-bug-report output; can anyone give me any advice on this? Apparently other people have gotten this to work so I'm still hopeful I can as well...?

for starters, remove the modelines.

I just bought an tft 1680x1050 display and I don't have any modes set at all. Not surprisingly it works perfectly.

modeline "800x600@56" 36.0 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 +hsync +vsync
modeline "800x600@72" 50.0 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666 +hsync +vsync
modeline "800x600@75" 49.5 800 816 896 1056 600 601 604 625 +hsync +vsync
modeline "800x600@60" 40.0 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync
modeline "1280x768@60" 80.14 1280 1344 1480 1680 768 769 772 795 -hsync +vsync

remove all that garbage.

Aha! Removing all the modelines worked! Those were added to xorg.conf by Ubuntu when I selected my monitor from the "Screens and Graphics" utility. I removed those, turned back on the edid detection, and restarted and voila!

Thanks! :)

another case where brain dead automatics and 'userfriendlyness' hurt the user.

There are reasons why I don't like ubuntu....
