169.04 drivers and Xorg ABI = 3.0

The 169.04 drivers report an ABI version error when run against the Xorg 1.4 servers shipping with Fedora rawhide. However, they are semi-stable against those servers when run with -ignoreABI. They seem to have no problems with OpenGL and simple X requests, but usually segfault when faced with more complex X applications like FireFox.

Might you be interested in bug reports based on running these beta drivers using -ignoreABI ?

Or is support for ABI=3.0 expected after the next full driver release ?

I would say that nVidia's position is rather positive.

Aaron does not rule out support in the next driver release, so they are probably making some progress toward implementing the current state of play, despite the segfaults. I do not see how they could really commit to anything more.

However, bug reporting on ABI 3.0 without render acceleration makes little sense, so the 1.3 Xorg server is the only sensible option until the next driver comes out.

The new gdm makes -ignoreABI difficult enough to make me less than sorry to forget about it.

Re: 169.04 drivers and Xorg ABI = 3.0

I think there may be a little confusion about versions here. xserver version 1.4 (which was included in the X.org 7.3 release) has an ABI version of 2.x, which is supported. The unsupported ABI is only in the git master branch of the X server, and has not yet made it into any official releases. The Rawhide packages, despite having 1.4.x version numbers, are actually built from the development branch that will eventually become xserver 1.5, and are not endorsed or supported by the X.org Foundation. Please see http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases...idual/xserver/ for the official X server releases. While NVIDIA can't promise that we'll support every official server release right away, we strive to support the official releases (the ones without .99 in their versions) as soon as possible.

Before an official release comes out, the ABI is a moving target so we can't mark it as supported until then. That's why some releases have partial support for bleeding-edge ABIs (e.g. the fact that 169.04 loads at all with -ignoreABI on ABI 3.0).

Hope that clears things up a bit!
