Unable to set native resolution/ NV-Control extension not found

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,

I am unable to set the native resolution (1680x1060) on my monitor (hp l2045w). I believe that n-vidia driver is the problem. I have the same error message each time I run nvidia-settings:
ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.

ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'.

ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'.

ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA VCSCs on ':0.0'.

I am attaching the bug report.
I am very very new to linux, so I need detailed instructions on how to fix it.

I appreciate any help. This far my screen has a standard (4:3 aspect ratio) resolution and everything is stretched and the fonts are distorted.

Thank you very much

According to your log, you're using the 'nv' driver, not the 'nvidia' driver.

depending how you installed the nvidia drivers...

Code:

nvidia-xconfig
should do the job for you...

tried that, nvidia-xconfig does not fix it. It creates the xorg.conf file all right, but since nvidia-settings can not find nv-control the settings in xorg.conf are useless. I guess the question is how to enable nv-control (nvidia X server)?

After running nvidia-xconfig, you need to restart the X server. The easiest way to do this is probably by hitting ctrl-alt-backspace. Note that this will also kill any apps currently running on that server.

the x-server does not start back on. have to go back to the initial configuration
