Solaris 10 - quadro fx - Xorg lockup / hangs

Hi,

I have been using an nvidia quadro fx 3400 in a Dell Precision 670 running Solaris 10 x86 for a while now, and I have been extremely happy with its performance. Recently though, I ran into the Xorg lockup problem.

For over a year I've been using Solaris 10 from an 05 or 06 CD distribution. I perform regular patch updates, so the system was up-to-date. This distribution of Solaris did not come with the nvidia drivers, so I installed the package from nvidia's web site (NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-1.0-9755.run). I have had absolutely no problems with this setup, using a dual-screen setup under Xorg.

Just a few days ago, I was forced to re-setup the system. I downloaded the latest Solaris CD distribution (8/07), which comes with nvidia drivers pre-packaged. Frequently, CDE will lock up in the middle of doing some work (nothing spectacular: Mozilla, dtpad, etc.). The system will still work and I am able to log in, but anything graphics-related is pretty much busted. Typically, the last application I used will report 100% CPU usage ('top'), and I am unable to kill it. Also, I am unable to kill -9 or kill -TERM the Xorg process. Rebooting is the only option left.

I have since installed the latest nvidia graphics package (NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-96.43.01.run), but unfortunately with the same results.

Below, you will find some excerpts from the messages log. (Note that 'led' is the machine name). I will be happy to report on machine specs if you let me know what may be helpful.

Any help and pointers will be much appreciated.

Thank you!

- Alex

Update: Solaris 10 - quadro fx - Xorg lockup / hangs

Here's a preliminary update on this issue:

I removed the dual-screen setup and reverted to a single-screen setup. The issue persists.

Here some entries from the log files at the time of hang-ups:

/var/adm/messages:

<< This log entry does not coincide with a hang-up, but a near hang-up. The mouse cursor freezes for 1-5 seconds, but then the interface returns to functionality.

<< Again, these entries occurred at a near-hang-up.

Xorg.0.log also reports a lot of other stuff, such as:

(II) PCI I/O resource overlap reduced 0x0000ccd8 from 0x0000ccdf to 0x0000ccdb
(II) PCI I/O resource overlap reduced 0x0000cce0 from 0x0000ccff to 0x0000cce7

(II) PCI I/O resource overlap reduced 0x0000fe00 from 0x0000feff to 0x0000fe0f
(II) PCI I/O resource overlap reduced 0x0000ff40 from 0x0000ff7f to 0x0000ff5f
(II) PCI I/O resource overlap reduced 0x0000ff80 from 0x0000ffff to 0x0000ff9f

These entries must have been created during boot-time.

Does anyone have any comments on these entries or the problem overall?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Solaris 10 - quadro fx - Xorg lockup / hangs

Hi,

It appears as if the latest release of nVidia drivers (169.12 for Solaris x64/x86) may have fixed the problem. I have only been using the new drivers for 2 days, but have not yet come across a hangup as described in my earlier posts. So, until this rather hasty post is overturned by unfortunate events: thanks to nVidia for the driver update!
