XP and Vista sharing

Okay, so my main rig has XP and I can share folders quite easily within my named domain with my laptop that is running Vista. So I downloaded a few things on my lappy while on vacation and now would like to have that stuff over on my XP rig. However no matter what I do I keep getting errors when trying to access the Vista laptop.:

"//ZYX is not accessable. You may not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the admin of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Login failure: User account restriction. Possiable reasons are blank passwords are not allowed, login hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enfored"

So yeah ... ummm ... help???

Re: XP and Vista sharing

Have you configured both NTFS and Share level permissions on Vista?

On my Vista box at home, for example, I have a share setup with permissions like....

Drive F: (Backup)

Network Share Permissions
Everyone - Full Control

NTFS
Everyone - Read Only
Quinton - Full Control

I have a local user named "Quinton" on both the XP box and the Vista box using the same password. If the passwords are different, you'll have an authentication issue.

Did you say you were running a domain, though? If so, make sure that you are logging in to your XP machine with your domain credentials and that when you are adding users to the NTFS and Network share permissions on the Vista box that the Vista box is added to the domain. Also, make sure the users you add are formatted "DOMAIN\User" when configuring permissions.

Re: XP and Vista sharing

i think i know what's up.
vista is weird when it shares drives with xp systems.

i'm on my xp computer and wont be at my vista machine for a couple days (mobo died)
what you have to do is right click on the drive and access the sharing properties.
then click permissions (or w/e it's called to get to the place where you can change the users and full control stuff)
go to edit so that you can add a person/group.
then get to a place where you can search for users. click advanced search or search and double click the "everyone" and click add.

this will allow it to be viewed from an xp machine.

sorry if its incorrect in some parts but i have no way to replicate it on my xp machine and view if it's correct.

or something like that.

Overview
This package contains the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) responder. The network map on a computer running Windows Vista shows a graphical view of the computers and devices on your network and how they are connected by using the LLTD protocol. The LLTD responder must be installed on a computer running Windows XP before it can be detected and appear on the network map. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
