Universe at War feedback thread ...?

Anybody playing this or did it score a big 'meh'?

I got it yesterday. Played through the first mission. It's pretty bog standard rts affair so far really. Nicely polished tho, reminds me of the ground missions in UFO: Aftershock only played out in realtime.

Only played the demo of Empire at War but yeah pretty similar.

Performance isn't fantastic. Maybe in the mid 20s running at 1920x1080 but that was with DX10 enabled. Seems to be CPU limited more than GPU which makes sense when you see it.

I'll add more as I get into it.

Er...

ok anyway the first patch came out, made the ceiling 22% higher, which was nice, though you can hack it to zoom out like SupCom and the performance doesn't take *that* much of a hit, so why they only did 22% I'll never know.

Single player campaigns grow old fast and the board game style global conquest just feels like combining skirmish battles with scissors/paper/stone. The longevity only really squares up in multiplayer, which I never got to try cos frankly no bugger bought this game!

Basically, other than a few neat ideas (walkers rock), it doesn't have the finesse, pace, plot, performance or sheer enjoyment factor of C&C3. Not a bad game, just not a great one either.

Maybe Petroglyph will get it right 3rd time around.

How is the gameplay features and overall design compared to Sins of a Solar Empire?

Let's go with the word "minimal".

This is an RTS for people who hate fights that last more than an hour.

Sins is for people who hate fights lasting less than a month.

And thanks for replying. This was nearly my monologue thread!

monologue threads are the best kind, no differing opinions!

but I looked at the reviews and movies for this game. Reviews said be cautious and I haven't picked it up. I'm not a huge fan of the art style, it's very out there. I think it's a bit sad that the former cnc guys couldn't produce gold. CnC 3 is pretty meh if you ask me.

What C&C3 does well is unit balance. Every unit can cane half the others while getting whooped but the rest. But in UAW there's less of this clear distinction.

In fairness, there are two good sides that work in different ways (and a weird side thats, well, weird). Some good unit designs and the animations are great. But every mission in the campaign is the same. Build new base, fight off enemy. You get bored after the tenth one.

It gets a 7/10. You might like it more than me, but don't pay much money for it!

If anyone wants to try this game keep an eye out at Target. My local store has 3 copies in their clearance section for $12 a piece... not bad if you love RTS and just want another game to play with.

The game is ok...I've played though some of the single player campaign. The interface though seems kind of clunky compared to what they did for Empire at War....
