MCP73 Ethernet under Ubuntu Hardy is dead?

i just installed Ubuntu Hardy on a Packard Bell Imax x8030 desktop. The ethernet device uses the chipset MCP73 from Nvidia. The device is correctly seen from the system, however it generates no traffic, is unable to ping anything - is dead. It doesn't ever increment the TX packets or error counters, so actually nothing goes in or out of this controller. I checked with modprobe to see if the nforcedeth module was loaded and it was, so I`ve no clue on how to get this to work.

I'm using kernel 2.6.24-12-generic. Should I compile something manually? Or just wait for ubuntu programmers to fix this?

Thanks everybody! Andrea

In my experience, the appearance of an ethX-device means that the drivers are fine. Are you sure your network setting (IP etc) are correct? What's the output of

ifconfig eth0
(or whatever device it is)?

dmesg | grep -i forcedeth

give you any hints?

Here you are:

$ ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:40:ca:a1:85:4e
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
          Interrupt:219 Base address:0xa000

$ dmesg | grep -i forcedeth
[  40.955646] forcedeth: Reverse Engineered nForce ethernet driver. Version 0.61.
[  41.475040] forcedeth 0000:00:0f.0: ifname eth0, PHY OUI 0x20 @ 1, addr 00:40:ca:a1:85:4e

Your ethernet device is neither RUNNING, nor does it have an IP address. It needs both to transmit data.

Uh, is your cable plugged in? Are the green LEDs on NIC and switch on?

Yeah, cable is plugged of course, however I can't get any activity on the card, nor the leds light up on the card or on the router lan port. However router works fine with other pcs connected over lan. ifconfig eth0 up doesn't help either.

EDIT: I also manually assigned an ip, of the same range of the router one - but nothing.

Re: MCP73 Ethernet under Ubuntu Hardy is dead?
I noticed some more things. Running dmesg | grep eth0 shows an interesting message:

eth0: no link during initialization
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): link is not ready

Also, I noticed that the unsuccessful pings increment the values on the local loopback interface counters... :/
