compiling problems with nvidia-installer

1 Attachment(s)
hi there!
at first thanks to nvidia for the great idea to develop the nvidia installer. BUT:

i have great problems to get things working:

i downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run and startet it with the --update flag.

the first error message i received was that the installer failed to find my kernel headers. i fixed that prob by using --kernel-include-path=/location-where-they-are

the installer continued building the kernel interface
but then it stops and i get this: (cut from /var/log/nvidia-installer.log

executing: 'cd ./usr/src/nv; make nvidia.o SYSINCLUDE=/usr/src/kernel-header
s-2.4.20-1-k6/include/'...

You appear to be compiling the NVIDIA kernel module with
a compiler different from the one that was used to compile
the running kernel. This may be perfectly fine, but there
are cases where this can lead to unexpected behaviour and
system crashes.

If you know what you are doing and want to override this
check, you can do so by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH.

In any other case, set the CC environment variable to the
name of the compiler that was used to compile the kernel.

*** Failed cc sanity check. Bailing out! ***
make: *** [gcc-check] Fehler 1
-> Error.
ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

i remembered when i first tried to install the nvidia-drivers (without the installer) i just dropped the line IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH into the makefile of the driver and then it nearly worked.

for information my setup: amd k6 450 mhz 128 MB ram, running gnu linux debian testing/unstable the gpu is an noname-brand running an geforce2 MX 200-chipset

(cut from /proc/version: Linux version 2.4.20-k6 (herbert@gondolin) (gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)) #1 Mon Jan 13 23:49:14 EST 2003)

my running gcc-version is: Version: 3:3.2.3-0

can anybody help me with this! i got the graphic-card nearly 10 month ago and it never worked 3d on my system! i now tried possibly everything!!!

thanks for helping me!

greeting

nicolas

Read the README. You obviously haven't -- or at least, you haven't seen the section that talks about this problem.

Using a gcc2 compiled kernel with a gcc3 compiled nVidia kernel module WILL fail, if you do the IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH deal.

Why do people see that "IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH" message and immediately try it, rather than seeing the "look at the README" message and try that? Does anyone have a clue?

Anyway, the solution for you is to recompile your kernel with your system compiler, gcc 3. Or, install gcc 2.95.4 somewhere OTHER than /usr/bin, and export CC=/path/to/the/gcc2/executable before running the nVidia installer.

thanks! i found another thread in this forum that deals with the same problem (connected with a knoppix-system). read it and understood it! ;-)

i'll try to do as you told me!

ps: i could kick myself for ignoring RTFM ;-)
