OMG, they're getting sued... Nvidia will handle this the same way they handled the hacked SLI drivers...

Why? They just made PhysX available to anyone who wants to run it on their hardware, including Intel and AMD/ATI. It's up to that 3rd party make their driver work with it.

I wasn't aware that they made it available... I thought it was exclusive for Nvidia cards, ie the same way that SLI supposedly works on Crossfire boards but they won't allow it... Would the 3rd party pay anything, ie royalties?

nVidia already allowed ATI to accelerate PhysX, but I didn't expect this so soon. This is great!!! (but unofficial)

So does this mean this will work on older nVidia cards, aka my 8800 GTS 640 ?

So ATI does Havok and Physx, does Nvidia get this advantage to?

Not likely. The plan is a prudent move by NV, similar to what Creative Labs did with the original SB Live. When Creative released the Live, they did so with EAX, in an effort to compete against A3D. CL made their API an extension of DirectSound3D, and made it an open standard so that all companies could use it. 3rd parties then used EAX, and CL made it so that EAX 3.0-5.0HD were pretty much exclusive.

If all NV and ATI cards support PhysX, but only ATI cards, devs will likely pick PhysX over Havok. Once Havok dies and PhysX becomes the standard, NV can pull some exclusivity or royalty BS, like CL did. I hate it, but it's smart.

Havok is not GPU accelerated, so doesn't matter what card you have.

It will be, ATi is working with havok to transparently offload certain calculations to GPU.
But it happens behind the scenes apparantly, so the app isnt aware of it, nor is the developer.
This is apparantly supposed to be added to the regular havok, and havokFX is dead.

Actually the ATI/Havok reports seem to be PR only :(

Saw this note from Ryan Smith one of the AT editors in a post at those forums:

Quote:

Hey guys, I just thought I'd stop by and comment on this since I saw it. We've looked in to the matter and I have been unable to get any confirmation that Havok/AMD are seriously working on a Havok implementation on CAL for hardware acceleration. The press release at the heart of the matter seems to have been a strategic press release against NVIDIA (both Havok and AMD compete against NVIDIA right now) reaffirming that yes, Havok does take in to account AMD CPUs in their development efforts. It doesn't look like there are any new products in the pipeline right now, Havok seems pretty dead on the idea since Havok FX died.
