Performance problems with nvidia 8600 GT 512 Mb ram DDR2

I use nvidia 8600 GT on archlinux 64 bit and i have some performance problems.
I use nvidia drivers 173.14.09, compiz 0.7.6, firefox 3.

On compiz some plugin ( like scale or desktop switching) aren't very smooth.
Iuse the option loose binding, not indirect rendering.

On Firefox scrolling on some sites is bad ( x example gmail ).
I use flash with nspluginwrapper.

Without compiz if i move a window and i look to lateral edge, i see a bad refresh.

Thanks

Post up the contents of your xorg.conf file please.

Try to disable the powermizer

My geforce 8600 gt is for desktop so powermizer has only 1 performance level.
I show you powermizer in nvidia settings:

Try turning on the following options under "Device" and see if it helps:

Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
Option "HWCursor" "true"
Option "BackingStore" "true"
Option "RenderAccel" "true" (should be on by default, but no harm in forcing it)

See if that helps.

I added this option to xorg.conf and compiz goes a little bit better! Thank you.

The bad refresh without compiz and bad scrolling on firefox remains.

firefox performance problems are due to poor 2d acceleration...known problem...no real fixes for that atm.

Yup, firefox scrolls "goofy" on some websites, while fine on others. I've always just figured it's Firefox.

This is a VERY well known problem with the bad nvidia drivers. There's a million forum threads here about it. Everyone has different problems with the 8000 series cards - all to do with bad performance. Wheather it be choppy scrolling, laggy resizing of windows or just unusuable KDE4, it's nvidia's fault. Not yours.

They said this is going to be fixed in a future release, so sit tight.

I'll gather up all the bad performance threads and post a master thread soon.

That master thread is interesting. I am wondering if there any reports of issues in Chrome that are similar to the ones FF is producing? The reason I ask is simply to investigate what kind of changes in programming can be implemented to workaround faulty drivers/cards. The first thing I am going to do in testing is set up a solid vCloud Datacenter so that I keep all my important information in the cloud and try to operate from an external viewpoint. It makes tasks like these a lot less risky.

Also, I really wanted to point out the crazy effects I have seen video cards have on audio conversions. For example, I was using a popular YouTube to MP3 converter and because the video card was unable to process the video, the audio conversion was compromised. I can imagine that being really frustrating if you are a basic user.
