8 Pin power adapters?
I'm not buying anything yet, but the main snag that's stopping me from considering a GTX 280 is that I supposedly need a new power supply.
Updated models of my PSU have a 6+2pin connector, but mine does not. All other specs are identical. My PSU has 4 12v rails with 18A each. I know single rails are preferred, but this thing should be plenty for one video card, even one has power hungry as a 280. So, how many people are using a GTX 280 with an 8 pin power adapter rather than a PSU with a native 8 pin power cable? I've heard some people say that using a power adapter causes some problems, but others say it doesn't. So lets do a poll... Vote whether you're having problems with your setup or not. Problems could be heat issues, stability problems, fan problems, or anything else like that. |
Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
i was using a native 8-pin from my Silverstone with single massive rail ;)
no problems, now that GTX 280 dropped in price, i might grab one again |
Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
I'm using 620hx with the 6+2 pin wire that goes directly into PSU. No problems.

Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
i had to buy a new TT 1200W. my old TT 750W didn't have one so i opted to upgrade the PSU also.
no problem so far except for the bug that the keep the fan @ 100% and never return to normal even after the temps are low.. using Rivatuner profiles to bypass this problem for now |
Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
Honestly I have used it both ways and haven't seen an issue with either.

Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
Native 8-pins ... i'm not in the mood for power troubles.
i've got the Tt ToughPower 850W & happy with it so far. modular cables , 2x modular 6-pins , 2x 8-pins (come with power cable) & 2x 8-pin to 6-pin converters , in short you wont be needing to replace it for a while! |

Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
This is why I went with a Tt 1200W... mainly because it was in jAkUp's sig so it has to be good :D

Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
Just wondering... why did so many people go straight to a new PSU rather than using an adapter?

Re: 8 Pin power adapters?
Do not want to take the risk.
I'm still going along with my trusty Antec 550watt HE. I need to upgrade though if I want a 4870 or a 200 series. |
