XFX 260 GTX XXX Fan issue at boot. Is it broken?

I just realised that my brandnew XFX 260 GTX XXX since the first start speeds

up like a hairdryer for 3 times about 2 seconds each time and than boots normally at 40% in XP32.

Is this a normal behaviour for that videocard?

In my view it's weird and I'm about to send it back.

What do You think?

Re: XFX 260 GTX XXX Fan issue at boot. Is it broken?

I don't have that issue with my EVGA 260 but I did have that exact same issue with my 4870, one of the annoyances that drove me nuts. The 4870 would also "wind up" at shutdown and when entering/waking from standby/sleep, that's when it woke up at all ;)
I'd suggest calling XFX, see what they say.

@ginfest

Do You mean the 4870 did that winding up 3 times in a row as well ?
My old XFX 7800 GTX XXX just did that once while booting.

3 times is strange for me.

Hopefully here are more owners of that videocard.

Calling XFX was what I did once because of my 7800 GTX here in Germany. The lady was so arrogant they did not help me a bit.
I've read in other forums that XFX is known for that kind of customer service.

Re: XFX 260 GTX XXX Fan issue at boot. Is it broken?

Well, I misread the 3 times part, but my 4870 did have that issue, the fan would run full speed at start up and shutdown. I can't say that it was/wasn't 3 distinct times, just that it did it.
Sorry you had no luck with XFX, no comment on that company, just that I always buy EVGA for NV and never have had a support problem.

Only once on mine. You can try to post here, and a xfx tech will respond.

Thank You for the link of xtreme. I registered already and I'm waiting for their mail for hours by now.

What I very much dislike with the xfxforce registering procedure is that You are forced to give Your personal data: Full Name, Telefonnumber (!). I think thats none of their business. I will definitely not register there.
If I can't get this card to work I simply will give it back and try a brand with a friendly customer service.
A wellknown strategy is declaring the product as fully functional and the problem as not existing.

It spins up really fast continuously only from a cold boot here, until it goes into Windows... If I restart from Windows, it doesn't spin up at all...

@Lfctony

Maybe the Fan Control is not working properly and nvidia did a bad job?
If the fanwhirling goes til desktop it would drive me crazy.
It's the same with my card: only from a cold boot it does the boosting three times, when I reboot the card is nearly inaudible.

Maybe my motherboard is too old. A8N-SLi Premium.

Please explain more. It is normal for the card to spin 100% at boot but then slow down at POST

Re: XFX 260 GTX XXX Fan issue at boot. Is it broken?

@hemmy
Like I explained
My old XFX 7800 GTX XXX has been starting every boot with this hairdryer noise - You may call it 100% but there's no tool to prove it -
my just arrived XFX 260 GTX XXX start every cold start with three boosts
like wwww---wwww---wwww and after that boots normally without any further noise even in crysis benxchmark at 1600x1200 High.

My problem is that this symptom is unique. XFX has - as always if You complain about a faulty product never ever heard of that and naturally it is Your inability Your mainboard or whatever. This business is incapable of admitting a mistake. They have no responsibility as soon as they got Your bucks. May they go to hell.

Re: XFX 260 GTX XXX Fan issue at boot. Is it broken?

It is normal for the card's fan to start up at full speed and then slow down. It should only do it once and then go on. It could be the way your motherboard or power supply interacts with the card making it start up multiple times. It would seem to me almost like the system would have to be restarting twice after it powers on. Can you try the card in another system? Give a system spec run down.

Re: XFX 260 GTX XXX Fan issue at boot. Is it broken?

Thank You so much XFX Support. So at last my complaining succeeded. But the support in germany is indeed lousy, even according to inofficial informations of a big seller.

Here are my system specs
X2 4800+ socket 939
A8N-SlI Premium
2GB Corsair CMX1024-3500LL Pro
XFX 260 GTX XXX
B-Quiet Straight Power 650 Watt

Your advice might be helpful. Strange enough that I seem to be the only one - and I hate this - to suffer from this symptom.

But why does my XFX 7800 GTX XXX which worked for 3 years without one single issue did its job? And Yes - at bootup it's whirling for about 5 seconds and then there's peace,

Is this really necessary? Even after 3 years this noise makes me nervous.

Tomorrow I will get the Asus P5Q and the brandnew E8600. So hopefully my card is working in that config without the triple hellride.

Nice to hear from You again
