177.70 (BETA) for Linux discussion & problems thread

Hi everyone,

if you haven't noticed: 177.70 just got released and should solve several of the elder problems:

Quote:

Changes since 177.68:

* Added support for the following new GPUs:
o GeForce 9800 GTX+
o GeForce 9800 GT
o GeForce 8100P
o nForce 780a SLI
o nForce 750a SLI
o Quadro FX 770M
o Quadro NVS 160M
o Quadro NVS 150M
* Improved support for RENDER operations with the same source
and destination; this should enhance performance in
some situations, e.g. when dragging Plasma applets in KDE4.
* Fixed a text rendering performance regression that affected
GeForce 6 and 7 series GPUs.
* Fixed a regression that caused text to be missing or
corrupt on GeForce 6 and 7 series GPUs.
* Fixed a regression responsible for false negatives during
SLI video bridge detection attempts after X server
restarts.
* Fixed a bug that resulted in AGP FW/SBA settings and overrides
being applied incorrectly when using the Linux kernel's
AGP GART driver.
* Fixed a bug that caused initialization of the builtin AGP
GART driver (NvAGP) to fail.

Changes between 177.67 and 177.68:

* Added support for the GeForce 9700M GTS.
* Improved GPU video memory management coordination between the
NVIDIA X driver and OpenGL implementation; this should
improve performance with e.g. the KDE4 OpenGL compositing
manager.
* Fixed a RENDER corruption bug on GeForce 6 and 7 GPUs.
* Fixed a bug that caused GLXBadDrawable errors to be generated
when running more than one OpenGL application with
anti-aliasing enabled on GeForce 6 and 7 GPUs, e.g. wine.
* Fixed a bug that caused GPU errors when killing the X server
while an OpenGL application is running.
* Fixed a bug on GeForce 8, 9 and GTX GPUs that caused dynamic
display configuration to fail on GPUs not currently
driving an X screen.
this topic is intended to address the problems encountered with exact that version & simplify BUG-tracking

all problems go in here

thanks in advance :)

I did just hit another issue with text artifacts, this is with kde3 and gtk applications under kde4 after running for a while, desktop effects enabled.

While I'm happy that NVidia's putting out betas with more frequency, .70 for me has the same issues as .67 and .68- namely, I still can't resume when TuxOnIce is used for hibernation, and there's still text-corruption in ncurses-based programs like "less", "make menuconfig" and "vi" (at least) in gnome-terminal windows.

173.14.12 has none of these issues, BTW. Bug-report attached.

(BTW, I shouldn't say "text corruption"; it's more like "missing" or "not written out" blocks of text. What's on-screen is actually rendered correctly, it's just inaccurate.)

I get a segfault with this driver while starting KDM. Falling back to driver 177.68.
I attached a bug-report.

I want to thank all NVIDIA Linux driver devs. KDE4 is really usable now.
The only thing that is left is the sluggish Compositing with my 7600GT, I don't know if I am the only one with this "problem". (Just a little lag, nothing critical.)

My nvidia-bug-report.log is attached.

I have still a problem, that of the windows buttons (minimize, maximize and close) showing strange colors when using compiz and going on them with the pointer.
My card is a 7400GT.

I wonder if it fixes occasional slowdowns in KDE4 with IPP2... downloading.
And thank you devs - I really like to see often beta releases, which increases feedback.

The installer refuses to work on ubuntu 2.6.27_1 complaining about a xen kernel. We saw a patch that fixed this in the 177.13 driver. How about a patch for this driver?

plasma is finally kind of usable. However scrolling in konqueror and especially dolphin (kde4 versions of course) is still not as smooth as it should be.

I'm impressed too, also slow scrolling on certain sites (7600GT) is gone.
Overall performance is good in KDE4.

Not really, compared to composited window managers such as compiz, kwin seems quite slow and sluggish on my board.
