Laptop to TV screen resolution issues.

I having some trouble getting the right screen resolution from hooking up my laptop to my 40" LCD samsung HDtv. My laptop has a x1600 graphics card with a DVI out and the tv has a VGA in so I have to hook it up with a DVI to VGA adaptor. When I hook it up, specify that I want a second monitor with a mirrored image, I get a picture on the tv but its much smaller than the entire 40" (more like a 32" screen size). I tried messing around with the settings on the graphics card like selecting extended desktop, but then i cant get a video to play on the second monitor just on the main laptop screen. Is there a way I can hook it up so I can utilize the entire TV? Thanks in advance for your help regarding this issue.

Re: Laptop to TV screen resolution issues.

Sounds like the issue is on the tv and not on the pc. It really doesn't matter what resolution you throw to a tv as any of them should be able to stretch to the entire display. My guess is that it is set to a 1:1 mode of some kind, so it only fills part of the tv. If you have a 1920 x 1080 display and push 13 x 7 or 1280 x 720 to it, you'll probably need to change the viewing to something like "full" mode. (I'm assuming there is black all the way around the picture. If it's just on the sides then it is probably the aspect ratio.)

Yeah, with most TVs you'll have to play with either the strech settings, or play with custom resolutions to get around underscan and overscan issues.
