can't build driver when using High Memory Support
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I installed Gentoo Linux on my new box. Everything went ok. Now whern I compile High Memory Support in my Kernel I can't rebuild the Nvidia driver module. And without High Memory Support I can't use the whole memory.
Some details of my system (the nvidia-installer. log is attached):
Video card:
Asus V8460
Bus 1, device 0, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti4600] (rev 16
more /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model: GeForce4 Ti 4600
IRQ: 16
Video BIOS:
Card Type: AGP
uname -a
Linux myhostname 2.4.20-gentoo-r5 #13 SMP Fri May 23 12:31:19 CEST 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Has anyone an idea whats going wrong?

somewhere in here some guy made some comment about some system variable about 512 or more memory that you had to set...

you're going to have to search this forum. some things about mem leaks or slow bootup

./usr/src/nv/nvidia.o: unresolved symbol highmem_start_page
./usr/src/nv/nvidia.o: unresolved symbol kmap_prot
./usr/src/nv/nvidia.o: unresolved symbol kmap_pte
Those are the problems from the log file.

How did you go about enabling highmem?

Is highmem enabled in the configuration of the kernel sources that are located in /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r5/build? (note that you have to do more than just changing the .config file, too...)

I enabled High Memory Support in the kernel, recompiled and installed the new kernel and all the modules.

After these steps I rebooted the system with the new kernel and tried to reinstall the nvidia driver
with sh NVIDIA......
which aborted with the message shown in the nvidia-installer.log

Did you change the EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile in the kernel source directory before you started? You should, otherwise you'll run into problems when you get a combination of kernel version files hanging around (in /lib/modules, in the source tree, and in other places). Did you do a make mrproper before reconfiguring the kernel? (save your config file somewhere else before mrproper'ing.)
