9800 GTS SLI & 9400M - "No devices detected."
2 Attachment(s)
I have a Toshiba Qosmio X305-706 laptop which has 9800M GTS SLI for heavy use and a 9400M for power saving mode.

I'm trying to get it working on Ubuntu 8.10. I installed the 180.16 because it said that it provides support for the 9800M GTS graphics chip. The installation of the run package seems to go okay and I can load the module without any apparent issues. However, when I start X, I get (EE) "No devices detected." The xorg.conf is one automatically created with nvidia-xconfig. This is with a completely new install of Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10.

Is the 9800M GTS w/ SLI support yet? If not, is it going to be supported in the future?

I am attaching the nvidia-bug-report.log and my xorg config for review. I've gzipped them due to issues with the forum software upload feature.

This is a bug in the X server: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18839

You can work around it by specifying the BusID of the primary device:

Section "Device"
    Identifier    "Device0"
    Driver        "nvidia"
    VendorName    "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BusID          "2:0:0"

Re: 9800 GTS SLI & 9400M - "No devices detected."
Thanks for the quick response!

Unforunately, now I'm getting this awesomeness:

(EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failure reading maximum pixel clock value for display device
(EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to determine output resource properties.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): The requested configuration of display devices (CRT-0) in
(EE) NVIDIA(0): MetaMode "nvidia-auto-select" is not supported on this
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Unable to use default mode "nvidia-auto-select".
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I haven't really changed my xorg config. Is there a way to blacklist the VGA out? I don't have anything connected to it.

I went through the bug report log, and I found this:

(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): No connected display devices detected; assuming 1 CRT (CRT-0)

I'm pretty sure the flat panel/DFP is connected, because I can use the console through it just fine.

I've uploaded another log report.

I've tried adding things like:

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
Option "ProbeAllGpus" "false"

From the documentation, but it doesn't help.

I've also tried downgrading to 177, same result.

Re: 9800 GTS SLI & 9400M - "No devices detected."
Try specifying the bus ID of the other half of your SLI device. I.e. 3:0:0 instead of 2:0:0.

Re: 9800 GTS SLI & 9400M - "No devices detected."
If I change it to the bus ID of the 9400M integrated (4:0:0), I then get an nvidia splash, the x server starts, gdm, gnome, etc. This is much better than a console, but it'd be really great to be able to use the dual 9800Ms.

This leads me to my next question: Is this setup actually correct? Will the driver somehow switch to the 9800M's under stress? All of them show up in the nvidia settings control panel in gnome.

Almost there :)

Re: 9800 GTS SLI & 9400M - "No devices detected."
Just to clarify, if I specify either 2:0:0 or 3:0:0, I get an error about no monitors being present, defaulting to CRT-0.

If I set the BusID to 4:0:0, X begins to work (at least with the 9400M)

Re: 9800 GTS SLI & 9400M - "No devices detected."
Oh, you're talking about hybrid performance SLI. I'm afraid that's not supported in Linux. I think there's usually an option to switch over to the other GPU in the BIOS boot menu, so you could try looking for that.

Is this something that may be supported in the near future?

There are currently no plans to support hybrid perf. and hybrid power SLI in Linux.
