Did you ever resolve this issue? I'm having the same issue using the OpenSuSE 11.1 RPMs provided by Nvidia.

NVRM: failed to unregister from the ACPI subsystem!
NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine was not called for 1 device(s).
NVRM: This can occur when a driver such as rivafb, nvidiafb or
NVRM: rivatv was loaded and obtained ownership of the NVIDIA
NVRM: device(s).

Hi,
I found that there was an older nvidia.ko driver left in folder
/lib/modules/"some older kernel folder"/weak-udates/updates/nvidia.ko ,

I have deleted that file and now it is working. That driver was left probably by older NVIDIA driver.
