(Ubuntu) NVIDIA drivers >177 don't work

Hey!

I've got a rather annoying problem with the new NVIDIA-drivers. I've been trying to get help on the official forums for a while now. Link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1124372

Nobody really seems to know what to do, however. A few people have come along and made great strides in an attempt to help me but it has been to no avail. It is probably something absolutely retarded I'm doing wrong! :P We'll see.

The problem is simply: Whenever installing a driver that is version 180.xx or above (anything below that works) the X-server will fail to find a suitable device and will glitch out, making me go into low graphics mode. I consulted the NVIDIA readme, but I am no Linux-geek (yet) so I actually had no idea what to do with the instructions found in it! :/

In any case, here's a summary of the thread for the lazy:
NVIDIA drivers >177 don't work. It fails to find a suitable display device.
I am using Ubuntu 8.10 with all the latest updates installed from the update manager. The graphics card is NVIDIA 8800GT 512MB from Inno3D and the mainboard is ASUS P5K.
I tried disabling propriety drivers. No luck.
I install drivers manually. Driver version 177.86 were also installed manually and worked flawlessly. (Though I've been hearing a lot of good stuff about the new 185.19 and 180.44, so I wanted to give at least one of them a shot)

I generated some error reports.
Here they are:

I was told to remove ' Load "type1"' from the Modules section of the last mentioned file. After that, I got these logs:

Also, the /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe file (I tried looking for it after looking at the readme) and I found the file completely empty. Working as intended? (I have a feeling it isn't)

I really, really need help guys! :( If anyone knows how to fix this, it'd be a appreciated. I spent quite a bit of time with this Linux at this point, and a complete reinstall would take a lot more time than I'd like it to! :/

Thanks for reading and (hopefully) responding.

Sincerely
- Christian aka. TheDesertDragon (of Denmark, if you hadn't guessed from the logs :) )

Re: (Ubuntu) NVIDIA drivers >177 don't work

The Ubuntu nvidia packages have a very bad habit of leaving behind their modules. Uninstall any Ubuntu nvidia packages using synaptic or apt as well as your manually installed driver with

Code:

sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-installer --uninstall
Once that's done go ahead and reboot and reset to default configuration which will use the nv driver.

After you've done that do a search for any remaining copies of nvidia.ko , once you've rm'ed those copies you should be able to install the driver again manually and be good to go.

Just remember every time you're upgrading the driver manually always always always run

Code:

sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-installer --uninstall
first before installing the new driver.

Good luck to you!

Re: (Ubuntu) NVIDIA drivers >177 don't work

Thanks for the suggestion but... Done that already! :/

EDIT: In fact, I just did it again, and it still doesn't work.

Re: (Ubuntu) NVIDIA drivers >177 don't work

And it won't work because it's 180 fault.
