ASUS M3N78 AND GeForce 880GT extremly unstable

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

since I have bought my ASUS M3N78 mainboard I'm trying to get my system work stable. With both, 64Bit and 32Bit Linux I get system freezes with lots of XID messages in my /var/log/messages.

This forum couldn't help me yet with it's threads and stability problem reports of the other users. I have tried all drivers released until now, but no one worked for me.

First I thought it is a hardware issue and I installed WinXP on a second partition of my hard drive. WinXP works well without any glitches.

So I turned of the nvidia driver and run my Linux with nv only and made sure that the nvidia kernel module is not loaded. The system works well, without any problems, but without 3D acceleration. Therefore my Linux is useless because I like gaming on linux with cedega and native games.

Currently I don't know what I can do to get this system right.

After the system freezes I tried to log in via ssh to create a nvidia-bug-report but it doesn't work. My pc was frozen to deep and I can't login via ssh and only a hard reset worked. Sometime I get this freezes up to 7 times a hour with the nvidia driver and I have tried all up to 185.19. 180.44 seems to be the best of the drivers and let me work about 2 hours before the freeze occurs.

Here are some of my XID erros from /var/log/messages of openSuSE 11.1 32Bit with PAE Kernel:

Then I though IRQ sharing could be the cause and I checked my IRQ and saw that the nvidia modul shares the IRQ with the my soundcard and I removed the soundcard and used the onboard one. The system freezes again :(
The next step was to remove my graphics card and use the GeForce 8200 onboard card. The system freezes once again after minutes. Is the ASUS board really that bad that I'm unable to get a stable system?

The next day I used windows and tried once more how stable the system with windows is. And it worked perfect. No blue screens, nothing. All stable.

So what can I do to get a working linux with my hardware?

The bug report I have created with the nv driver running can show you the system in detail. Later I will create one with the nvidia driver running. I'm very angry about the current state of my system and I will use linux and no Windows.

Please help :(

There must be a way out :(

There isn't. Don't buy
- Asus, because they have officially stated not to support Linux
- Nvidia, because you can see from this forum that they don't seem to be willing to see this through; if need be through refunding/replacing a useless mainboard.

But since we are stuck with this mainboard, and I don't feel like throwing a rather costly mainboard into the fire, we might as well have been hit by another snag. Depending on your kernel, would you see a message like this in 'dmesg':
[ 1.348773] ACPI Warning (nspredef-0858): \_TZ_.THRM._PSL: Return Package type mismatch at index 0 - found [NULL Object Descriptor], expected Reference [20080926]
[ 1.348779] ACPI: Expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0
?
You'll find it discussed elsewhere, it is a usual occurrence on Ubuntu, and in principle a BIOS problem. Find the reply from Asus as above. :(

Keep us updated when you have a solution, please!

I'm having the same issues with ACPI "reference package element" problems, the entire computer freezing up under X after an indefinite period of time, a lot of "NVRM: Xid" messages in dmesg, and general instability under Linux.

Might I suggest this thread. I'm going to try some of their suggestions when I get home today, before I send this board back for good.
