need help configuring xorg.conf for a 9600 GSO

3 Attachment(s)
I have a GeForce 9600 GSO, which used to work using Ubuntu's restricted driver. I've recently replaced Ubuntu with Debian and now I can only get X to start by using the xserver-xorg-video-nv package. First I uninstalled the nv driver, then I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run installer and ran it with the --kernel-source-path option and the installer completed successfully. Then I ran nvidia-xconfig and restarted X, but it failed. If I comment out the line
Code:

Driver    "nvidia"
X will start, albeit without utilizing the nvidia driver, of course. This is the X error:
Code:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:2:0:0.
(EE) NVIDIA(0):    Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for
(EE) NVIDIA(0):    additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "wfb"
(II) UnloadModule: "fb"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Here's the error:
Quote:

[ 7504.056884] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x26:0xffffffff:1091)
[ 7504.056894] NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed
Please see the section in the README about this problem.

Re: need help configuring xorg.conf for a 9600 GSO

Thanks for your help, Aaron. That got me closer to the solution. Adding
Code:

vmalloc=256MB
to the kernel parameters allowed X to start, although the system froze once I entered my password. So after understanding this is a memory-related problem, I tried to backtrack and think of any other memory configurations I've made. Then I remembered experimenting with setting my RAM to 128-bit ganged mode after an ASUS technician advised me the results would be "unreal." I set it back to 64-bit unganged mode and everything is working perfectly now. I think I'm just going to keep it real from now on.
